Android/Linux lovers are whooping it up now that a startup called PengPod reached its crowdfunding goal.
PengPod promised to ship affordable 7- and 10-inch tablets if it could raise $49,000 by today.
With a few hours left, PengPod has raised almost $60,000.
PengPod created excitement because it promised to build a tablet that would run Linux as well as Android and be "free of Google and Android's restrictions." That meant that tablet owners could run whatever software they want, plus "hack around and have some fun."
Over the years, Google has imposed various rules and restrictions on the use of Android.
But funding for PengPod got off to a slow start and in early November, it looked like the PengPod would never be. Word slowly spread because those who helped fund the project were getting a pretty good deal.
For $120, they got a PengPod 700 7-inch tablet with 1GB RAM and 8GB SSD. And $185 got them the PengPod 1000, a 10-inch tablet with 1GB RAM and 8GB SSD.
The team is also building something called the PengStick for an $85 contribution. It's a "PC on a stock" that you hook up to a TV or monitor. It runs Android or Linux.
With the funding goal reached, PengPod promises to ship these tablets in January.
