Help from tech startups in the wake of Hurricane Sandy continues to pour in.
The New York Tech Meetup is tapping into its network of 28,000 local tech professionals, asking them to help those affected by network outages and other technical issues because of Hurricane Sandy.
NYTM started with its network, but is also looking for additional volunteers who know to do things like get a server up and running, recover data, and assess electrical damage.
"We know that we have a really big community of people in New York that have tech skills and I think now more than ever when there's a disaster, the challenge of recovery is getting people connected and back together," NYTM General Manager Jessica Lawrence tells Business Insider.
Currently, there about 450 people who have volunteered their time to help with Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Lawrence says that right now people are mostly concentrated on daily needs. Even though those aren't technical issues, NYTM's volunteers are still pitching in.
NYTM is currently in talks with the Department of Education to see how they can help get schools back up and running, and is in contact with the Board of Elections to help polling places with tech issues.
Government agencies, small businesses, non-profits, schools, and other organizations who need tech support can ask the NYTM for assistance.
There's also a database to help people find places to work, and let those with extra office space post a listing.
