Apple is exploring how to drop Intel chips in favor of its home grown chips, Adam Stariano, Peter Burrows, and Ian King at Bloomberg report.

According to their report, Apple's engineers are confident they can make their own chips that are powerful enough to power laptops and Macs.

However, the report cautions that if this happens, it probably won't happen for years to come. Apple has been using Intel chips since 2005.

Currently, Apple designs its own custom chips for the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and iPod Touch.

Over time, Apple's engineers believe these devices will be a lot more alike, and therefore they should all be running on the same chip set.

From a purely logical standpoint, this report makes sense. Apple is a company that likes to have complete control. So, of course it wants to have control over the chips.

And when you look at the big management shake up from last week it makes even more sense.

Craig Federighi will be running iOS (mobile software) and OSX (traditional computing), which would be merged over time.

Then there's Bob Mansfield. He was supposed to leave Apple, but is sticking around to lead Technologies, which will work on wireless technology and semiconductors.
