One of the easiest ways for a hacker to gain access to your personal information is to take it off a website you are browsing on that requires a password.
Typically, if you are browsing on an unsecured, wireless connection (say for example at a local coffee shop), anyone with a little know how and the right programs can get easy access to your info.
Luckily, many website built in a protection system which can help prevent this. Banks, for example, make you sign in using a special secure URL and many will send notifications if an "unrecognized" computer accesses your account.
Facebook allows you to opt-in for similar security measures, if you want, and we recommend you do.
