Trump says he's nominating Chad Wolf to be DHS chief after a government watchdog said he was serving illegally

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf testifies before a House Committee on Homeland Security hearing on the coronavirus and the FY2021 budget, Tuesday, March 3, 2020 in Washington.
  • President Donald Trump announced he's nominating Chad Wolf to be Homeland Security chief.
  • Wolf has been leading the agency in an acting capacity for nearly a year.
  • The announcement came less than two weeks after a government watchdog said Wolf was appointed invalidly and is not legally eligible to serve in his current role.
  • Wolf has faced backlash this summer over the deployment of federal agents to US cities, and calls from congressional Democrats to resign.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he's nominating Chad Wolf to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Trump tweeted, "I am pleased to inform the American Public that Acting Secretary Chad Wolf will be nominated to be the Secretary of Homeland Security. Chad has done an outstanding job and we greatly appreciate his service!"

This announcement came less than two weeks after the Government Accountability Office said Wolf, who has been serving in the role in an acting capacity, and acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli were appointed invalidly and are ineligible to serve in their current roles under a 1998 law.

The Trump administration rejected the GAO's conclusion, which is not legally binding, and dismissed it as "laughable."

Wolf has been at the center of backlash over the controversial deployment of federal agents into US cities in recent months amid ongoing protests over racism and police brutality. The acting DHS chief in a July interview with Fox News said he did not need an invitation from local leaders to send federal officers into their communities.

"I don't need invitations by the state, state mayors, or state governors to do our job," Wolf said.

"We're going to do that, whether they like us there or not," Wolf said. "That's our responsibility."

A number of Democrats have called for Wolf to resign and his nomination, which requires Senate confirmation, could face fierce opposition.

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for vice president, sits on the Senate committee that would hold Wolf's confirmation hearing.

American workers are failing drug tests at the highest rate in 16 years, despite a growing trend of marijuana legalization

Canada-based marijuana producer Aurora Cannabis pulled off a high sales volume during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic
  • Americans tested positive more often for drugs in 2019 than the last 16 years.
  • Quest Diagnostics, one of the largest US testing providers, said in its annual report that marijuana rates were up while opiates and heroin continue to fall.
  • Some activist organizations oppose how prevalent workplace drug testing has become, especially in non "safety-sensitive" industries.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

American workers subjected to drug tests at work tested positive at the highest rate in 16 years in 2019, according to one of the largest testing providers, despite growing public support for legalized marijuana.

Quest Diagnostics, which has made headlines this year for COVID-19 testing delays, said Tuesday that workforce drug positivity rates hit 4.5% in 2019, the highest since 2003. The company says the coronavirus pandemic — which shows no signs of stopping soon in the US — likely accelerated some substance use.

"There is no question that before COVID-19, rates of workplace drug positivity were trending in the wrong direction," Barry Sample, Quest's senior director of science and technology, said in a press release. "Organizations will need to consider the impact of COVID-19 not only on workplace safety but also as a health concern for their employees for some time to come."

Marijuana remained the most commonly detected drug, Quest said, despite a growing number of states where its medical and recreational use has been legalized. That number's expected to grow even more in 2020.

"We've seen some employers take kind of a back-seat position on marijuana and be more willing to maybe change their drug-testing requirements," Michelle Bearden, chief risk officer for a Texas-based staffing firm, told The Wall Street Journal.

Still, some US government agencies and many "safety-sensitive" industries consider cannabis a dealbreaker for candidates. Quest's Sample says "changing attitudes toward its use could pose heightened risks especially in safety-sensitive positions and those states exploring legalization."

Opiates and heroin bucked overall trends, with positivity rates falling compared to recent years. Positivity rates for commonly abused painkillers like oxycodone or Oxymorphone have fallen nearly 55% since 2015, Quest said. Still, overdose deaths have soared in the US during the pandemic, as economic uncertainty climbs with massive unemployment.

Initial Centers for Disease Control data for 2020 reported by The New York Times shows a 13% uptick in overdose deaths this year compared to 2019, in what could be a bad sign for the country's attempts at a continued decline in overdose casualties.

Many activist groups have urged tighter regulations on workplace drug testing, which the ACLU says "is unfair, often inaccurate, and unproven as a means of stopping drug use."

"Employers have the right to expect workers not to be high or drunk on the job," the organization says. "But they shouldn't have the right to require employees to prove their innocence by taking a drug test."

Luxury brands are reportedly opening 'shops' on Amazon in September, just in time for runway show season

Amazon jeff bezos
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos speaks at the the Amazon re:MARS convention in Las Vegas on June 6, 2019.
  • Amazon is reportedly taking its first major step into the luxury fashion space, according to WWD.
  • The online retailer has been slowly building its focus on fashion over the past few years.
  • Business Insider previously reported that Amazon teamed up with Vogue for an online store showcasing independent designers.
  • The 12 brands reportedly joining the new platform are said to be higher-end than those involved with the earlier Vogue x Amazon initiative.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Amazon is forging ahead with plans for a luxury brand platform, with the first of a dozen international accessories and ready-to-wear labels opening shops on the site as fashion show season kicks off in September, WWD has learned.

The labels, which hail from Europe and the U.S., will operate their own concessions on the site with a business model that's more similar to the Farfetch marketplace than Net-a-porter or Matchesfashion.

The brands partnering with Amazon will also have access to centralized warehousing in the U.S., operated by Amazon, and be able to lean on the tech giant's vast delivery network.

The platform will be launched in the U.S. initially, and Amazon has been working directly with the brands' U.S. offices and subsidiaries. Dany Keirouz, head of brands relations and development at Amazon Fashion, is understood to be heading up the project, according to a market source.

Asked about the platform, an Amazon spokeswoman said the company "can't comment on rumors or speculation." Keirouz did not return a request for comment.

As WWD reported in January, Amazon planned to unveil the concessions-based luxury platform in the spring, but because of the coronavirus quarantines, the launch was pushed to September.

Amazon is understood to be giving the brands full control over the look and feel of their virtual stores, allowing them to sell as much as they please, control when or if they go on markdown, and — crucially — leverage Amazon's speedy delivery and customer service platform.

As reported, sources said a sprawling warehouse is being built in Arizona to accommodate the platform, while a $100 million marketing campaign is in the works.

According to multiple sources, Amazon also plans to work with these brands on TV, film and streaming projects going forward.

The 12 launch brands are understood to be higher-end than those involved in the Common Threads: Vogue x Amazon Fashion initiative supported by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

The Common Threads/Amazon Fashion project was formed specifically to boost designers' sales during the pandemic. Those taking part in that program include Anna Sui, Thakoon, Tabitha Simmons, Derek Lam and Batsheva.

Although the two projects are separate, both are part of Amazon's wider push into fashion and luxury.

Amazon is also understood to be working with a selection of London Fashion Week designers on another, sustainability related, commercial project that will be revealed next month ahead of the shows.

Since 2012, Amazon has put fashion at the top of the agenda, shifting from one approach to another looking for an opening, testing and iterating, buying companies, launching brands, mashing up trends and formats, moving ahead with some while abandoning others.

In Europe, however, it has met with resistance — at least on the luxury end.

Nearly two years ago, according to sources, Amazon suggested that multibrand retailers set up online shops to sell designer and luxury goods, but the idea never came to fruition.

The best stove-top cleaners

$

  • Spills and messes in the kitchen are a natural part of cooking. But the right cleaning products will keep your stove-top gleaming and spotless.
  • ZEP Heavy Duty Citrus Degreaser will tackle the worst spills on baked enamel stove-tops, gas or electric.

Whether you can barely boil water or are a gourmet cook, stove-tops can get messy. Food gets dropped and then burned onto the surface, pots boil over, hot grease flies everywhere — just preparing one meal can leave quite a problem. Ignore the chore of cleaning up for a couple of days and you've got a real quagmire.

Needless to say, the quicker you clean up a spill or splatter on a stove-top, the easier it will be to remove. It's a good idea to wipe away food and grease from the stove-top after every cooking session. That can usually be done in just a few minutes with the right cleaning tools and product. Then, you can give the stove-top a more thorough cleaning once a week or so depending on how often you cook.

The best product for cleaning a stove-top depends on the surface material: baked paint or porcelain enamel, ceramic (often called a glass cooktop), or stainless steel. There are even some differences in how you should safely clean a gas stove-top and an electric coil stove-top with drip pans.

But for every stove-top, there are some basic steps for a thorough cleaning:

  • Step 1: Always start with a completely cool surface and with everything turned off.
  • Step 2: Remove as many components like knobs, electric coils, drip pans, gas grates, and burner caps as possible. For gas stove-tops, cover the gas fuel openings with plastic wrap or a coffee cup to prevent splashing any cleaning solution into the opening.
  • Step 3: Place the loose components with heavy grease and burned-on food, in cleaning solutions to soak. Wipe down knobs and lightly soiled components so they are ready to reinstall.
  • Step 4: Wipe down the entire surface with a damp cloth to remove crumbs and light soil. Tackle tough stains using the proper cleaning product and tools for the specific type of surface to prevent damage and to leave it streak-free.
  • Step 5: Reassemble the stove-top and pledge to clean it after every use to make the job easier next time.

After a lifetime of cooking in test labs and at home, I've cleaned every type of stove-top. Because it certainly wasn't my favorite task, I tested dozens of cleaning products and care tips to find the best. Any type of cleaning that requires less elbow grease, appeals to me. I'm always looking for the most effective, easiest to use, and the best value in products for myself and others.

For the simplest cleaning process, I swear by daily wipedowns and then a thorough cleaning after a big cooking session.

Here are the best stove-top cleaners:

Updated 8/25/2020. We updated prices and links and added relevant buying guides. We also removed TriNova Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish as the best option for stainless steel due to stocking issues.

The best for baked enamel
Zep cleaner

ZEP Heavy Duty Citrus Degreaser will cut through the greasy film on both gas and electric baked enamel stovetops.

For decades, almost every home stove-top was constructed of baked porcelain enamel, a heavy-duty, heat resistant material that is fused to the steel surface. Today, you can still purchase both gas and electric shiny porcelain enamel stoves as well as matte painted baked enamel finishes.

Both finishes are durable and easy-to-clean once you get rid of the greasy film that can coat the surface. With ZEP Heavy Duty Citrus Degreaser, there's no need for scouring with abrasive pads. The natural citrus solvents will cut through the grease. Simply spray it on, wait a few minutes and wipe away the sticky messes. Finish up with just a clean cloth or sponge dipped in hot water for a final rinse.

I like to pour some ZEP into a separate spray bottle and dilute it 50/50 with water to use for small everyday messes. It is effective and safe to use on stainless steel, aluminum, and other metal surfaces.

For tough, burned-on food, spray on the ZEP and allow it to work for at least five minutes. You can then use a rubber scraper to loosen the food and wipe it away.  If you have a free-standing or built-in stove, be sure to lift the stove-top or remove the drip pans to clean away food that has dripped inside. You may be amazed at what you find.

Pros: Removes grease easily, pleasant citrus odor, available in one-gallon size for easy bottle refills

Cons: Can damage granite countertops and painted wood surfaces, usually only available online or in home improvement stores

The best for ceramic stove-tops
Weiman cook top cleaner

Ceramic stove tops are prone to scratching. So how do you get rid of burned-on food safely? Weiman Cooktop Cleaner Max can tackle the worst problems and still leave your stove-top streak and scratch-free.

After years of cleaning enamel and stainless steel cooktops that stood up to scrubbing from a steel wool pad, I encountered a smooth ceramic stove-top. It looked sleek and conducted heat well, but removing the overflow from a boiling pot was difficult until I found Weiman Cooktop Cleaner Max.

The micro-bead technology in the formula provides just the right amount of abrasive power to remove burned-on food and grease but doesn't scratch the surface. After cleaning with the lemon-scented paste and enclosed pad that conveniently stores in the lid of the container and rinsing, there are no streaks or watermarks at all.

Pros: Removes the worst burned-on messes and grease effectively, will not scratch ceramic surfaces, comes with a scrubbing pad

Cons: Does not remove scratches caused by knives, pots and pans, not readily found in all mass-market stores

The best for gas grates
Austin's ammonia

There's no scrubbing needed to clean grungy gas stove-top grates and burner heads with Austin's Clear Ammonia Multipurpose Cleaner.

I think we have established that we all love any type of cleaning that requires very little effort. If you own a gas stove-top, I can offer just that type of cleaning for filthy grates and grease-clogged burner heads: Austin's Clear Ammonia Multipurpose Cleaner.

All you need is a sealable plastic bag or container and Austin's. Simply place the grates and burner heads in the container and pour in just enough ammonia to cover the pieces. Seal up the container and let them "soak" for about eight hours or overnight. Remove the pieces, sponge them off with a bit of soapy water, rinse well with hot water, and they are sparkling clean! Just dry them and reinstall.

As with any too-easy-to-believe hack, there are a couple of things you should note. Ammonia has a very potent odor and should be used in a well-ventilated space. NEVER mix ammonia with other cleaning products, especially chlorine bleach, that can cause deadly gases. You should use tongs or wear protective gloves when removing stove-top pieces from the soaking solution to prevent skin irritation. Luckily, the ammonia can be safely disposed of down the drain.

Once you discover the cleaning potential of household ammonia, you'll find plenty of uses in the kitchen, laundry room, and throughout the house.

Pros: One-step cleaning, cuts through heavy grease and burned-on build up, works well to remove smudges

Cons: Powerful odor, potential skin irritant

The best for electric drip pans
Mr. Clean magic eraser

For those lingering bits of burned-on food on stove-top drip pans, Mr. Clean Extra Durable Magic Erasers work like a charm.

A small, white, brick-like miracle cleaning tool arrived on store shelves in 2003. Mr. Clean Extra Durable Magic Erasers uses melamine-foam activated with water as micro-scrubbers to remove stuck-on grime from nearly every type of surface including electric stove-top drip pans.

I grew up with an electric stove with burner coils and drip pans that took lots of abuse. It was my mother's favorite chore assignment for me. "Make those drip pans shine!" I remember plenty of time at the sink with hot water, scrubbing powders, and steel wool trying to get rid of burned-on food. Of course, I blamed her for letting the pans boil over in the first place.

To make cleaning simple, my first suggestion is to use Austin's Clear Ammonia Multipurpose Cleaner to give the drip pans a soak to cut through the grease and food on the pans. But if any bits linger, it is Mr. Clean to the rescue.

I usually cut the erasers into smaller pieces that can be used to scrub away residue and then tossed after they become really messy. Finish by simply rinsing with warm water to remove any foam particles that might remain.

Pros: Eraser can be cut to fit the cleaning job, disposable, removes really tough grime

Cons: Can dull the finish of new, highly polished drip pans

A Colombian entrepreneur launched a delivery service that leases electric wheelchair-motorcycles to mobility-impaired drivers

Martin Londoño, founder of MATT delivery service, demonstrating his motorized wheelchair.
  • After losing his ability to walk in a traffic accident, Martin Londoño converted his wheelchair into a motorbike that can reach speeds of 30 kilometers per hour.
  • He has built 10 wheelchair-motorcycles he plans to lease out to mobility-impaired people in Medellin, Colombia, as part of his delivery company.
  • Martin's bikes cost $1,500, which is more affordable than most motorized wheelchairs.
  • The company relies on electric batteries to limit their carbon footprint.
  • View more episodes of Business Insider Today on Facebook.

Martin Londoño lost his ability to walk when he was 18 after he was injured in a traffic accident.

Now, the Colombian owns and operates a delivery service that runs on electric wheelchairs — wheelchairs that look a bit like a motorcycle.

"I built this wheelchair for my own personal needs, to get around," Londoño, speaking in Spanish, told Business Insider Today. "I improved and increased my mobility, and I wanted to bring that to others."

Working out of his parents' lingerie store in Medellin, Colombia, Londoño has set up a delivery company called MATT, which stands for Mobility, Accessibility, Time, and Work, or Trabajo in Spanish. It's aimed at generating jobs for people with disabilities.

Londoño's motorized wheelchair can reach speeds of 30 kilometers per hour. It's similar to electric handcycles produced by European companies for people using wheelchairs, and it relies on lithium batteries, a front wheel with a steering handle, and engines that are typically used on electric bicycles.

The motorized vehicle costs $1,500, which is cheaper than most electric wheelchairs. Londoño says his company will provide the vehicles to those who will work with them for a year and charge them by taking a cut of their weekly earnings.

"They can use it for a while, pay it off, and take it home. If they don't want to work and just want to get around in it, they can," Londoño said. "They can be really productive people, and this gives them the freedom to do it."

BIT_ColombianWheelchairs_Thumb_3
The delivery company is providing jobs for people with disabilities.

So far, Martin has recruited two such staffers, who make delivery runs for local businesses who have converted to online sales because of the pandemic.

"I can go out with my nephews and share an ice cream and get around easily," one delivery driver, Wilson Guzman, said. "I can go get a soda in the street and get around so easily. I can take my dog out for a walk or take him to the park. And I can just get around normally like a person who walks."

To differentiate itself from large food delivery apps, MATT is working with businesses that need to deliver goods around the city with less of a rush. His clients include a jewelry store and a vegan restaurant that sells ingredients for customers to cook at home.

"We are trying to help the environment, and we like MATT's delivery service because it moves around with electricity," Elizabeth Garzon financial director for the restaurant Justo, said. "Just like they don't use gasoline, we recycle containers and don't use plastic."

MATT is hoping to get 10 more electric wheelchairs out into the streets in the following months. After the company increases its operations, Londono wants to find investors who could help to scale things up.

"Our mission is to reach as many people with disabilities as possible, so that they can benefit from the product we have developed," he said. "So we want to bring down costs as low as we can until the majority of people can access, and change, the city."

Texas Democrat Candace Valenzuela could become the first Black Latina elected to Congress

  • Texas Democrat Candace Valenzuela could make history by becoming the first Black Latina member of Congress in November.
  • Valenzuela won her primary in July and will face off against Republican Kim Van Duyne for Texas' 24th Congressional District.
  • The makeup of Congress has become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse, and the trend is expected to continue this election.

Texas could make history in November by electing the first Black Latina member of Congress

Candace Valenzuela secured the Democratic nomination for Texas' 24th Congressional District in July after defeating retired Air Force colonel Kim Olson in her party's primary.

Now, Valenzuela will face off against Republican primary winner Kim Van Duyne, a former Trump administration official and mayor of Irving.

Valenzuela, an educator and member of her local school board, said the problems exposed by the global pandemic and the recent Black Lives Matter protests contributed to her primary win.

"A lot of the issues that we have in our income disparities, in our inequities, are in our unequal application of justice," she told Business Insider Today. "All of those things did play a role in the win here. And I think they're going to continue to play a role going forward in November."

Valenzuela is running for a seat that has been held by the GOP for two decades. No woman or person of color has ever held that seat.

She has the backing of several prominent groups, including the female candidate-focused Emily's List and the congressional Hispanic, Black, Asian, and progressive caucuses. She also was endorsed by the late Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis.

Valenzuela has highlighted her upbringing throughout her campaign. According to her campaign site, her family struggled financially after her mother left the military. She fled with her mother from domestic violence and escaped to a gas station, where Valenzuela slept in a kiddie pool. She said the two of them were homeless and lived in shelters until her mother got back on her feet.

She's now balancing her campaign with being a mother of two children.

"My husband and mother-in-law and I have been juggling our time, because one person watching them the whole day is not something that's tenable for anybody," she said. So we're flipping our work schedules — my husband is often working into the night because my schedule requires my daylight hours. So I'm really proud of my family, but it is, it has been tough."

While the US Congress has become more racially and ethnically diverse over the past five elections, only about 22% of its current members are nonwhite. That's disproportionate when compared to the racial and ethnic diversity of the country's general population.

But Congress is likely to become slightly more diverse next year thanks to a group of candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Among them is Jamaal Bowman, a former principal in the Bronx who became the Democratic nominee for New York's 16th Congressional District after a surge in support fueled by the Black Lives Matter movement. He defeated a 16-term incumbent and is now likely to win the general election in his historically Democratic-voting district.

The best bathtubs

  • The bathtub isn't just a simple household fixture but an important vessel for washing and relaxing. With many different styles and models to choose from, you can find the right one for your family and home.
  • It's important to think about what your needs are when it comes to a bathtub. Are you looking to save space with a corner tub? Do you plan to sit up or recline while bathing? Do you need a place to put bath items like soap and shampoo bottles?
  • With bathtub prices ranging from the mid-hundreds into the thousands, be sure to consider how the tub is constructed, from materials to drain location, and what is necessary to install it.
  • The American Standard Cambridge Integral Apron Bathtub is our top pick. It is durable, comfortable, space-saving, and great for washing up the kids and having a leisurely soak.

After a long day, wouldn't you love a relaxing soak in the tub? Or is your reality more along the lines of kids' bath time, aka wet playtime, and if you're lucky, a quick shower for yourself? No matter how you use the bathtub, conventionally and unconventionally (e.g., washing the dog, cleaning Lego, holding live fish), it should fit your needs and your bathroom. This humble household fixture is a large investment, and there are so many different kinds out there.

From my early years gutting bathrooms on a demolition crew, to eventually remodeling them as a residential contractor, I know bathtubs. After spending hours at different bathroom showrooms testing out models, and discussing the pros and cons with other plumbing specialists, I landed on these options as the best bathtubs you can buy.

Even if you don't end up going with one of our top picks, there are several things you should keep in mind as you shop around. For a quick explainer of things to consider when shopping for a new bathtub, scroll to the bottom of this guide.

Here are the best bathtubs:

Prices and links are current as of 8/25/20. We streamlined the formatting of this guide to bring you the most relevant information quickly.

The best overall
American standard tub

Sturdy yet attractive, space-saving yet comfortable, the American Standard Cambridge Integral Apron Bathtub is ideal for families and adults.

What makes this bathtub so great — along with its price tag — is its all-around functionality. From the design to construction and durability, the American Standard Cambridge Integral Apron Bathtub has all the factors that make a great bathtub.

The American Standard Cambridge Integral Apron Bathtub sits flush against all three walls of your bathroom's alcove and features an integral apron on the exposed side facing the rest of the bathroom. This just means that the apron (also called a skirt) is part of the tub itself and not a separate piece that needs to be bolted on — which means less labor to install and a cleaner overall look.

It's constructed of Americast, an American Standard-patented material made by covering a steel base with a layer of porcelain enamel and adding a plastic composite backing underneath. This makes for a tub that is about half as heavy as cast iron but still has a nice, sturdy feel to it. I could definitely feel the difference between this tub and fiberglass models that had a bit more "flex" and a flimsier feel.

Another great thing about Americast is its durability. Porcelain enamel is really difficult to scratch, and if you ever chip the finish, it's easy to fix with a simple patch kit. American Standard will even ship you the kit you need, which makes it easy to match the color of your specific tub.

The glossy finish is easy to clean, and as long as you stay away from any kind of abrasive cleaners or pads — warm soapy water and a soft cloth will suffice — it will keep its luster for a long time.

Comfort-wise, this tub checked all the boxes for me. With an interior length of 54 inches, there was plenty of room for me to stretch out, and the 26-degree angled back made for a nice reclining position. Obviously, you should test out the tub in person if you can, but I'm 5'9", and I still had some wiggle room at my feet. With a depth of 17 inches, the American Standard Cambridge Integral Apron Bathtub is nice and deep, and that sturdiness I mentioned before really adds to the comfort factor.

Something else I noticed when testing out this tub was the non-slip coating applied to the bottom. I always appreciate safety features, and this one is camouflaged pretty well into the rest of the tub.

Pros: Sturdy, space-saving, comfortable, and versatile

Cons: Heavy to transport, might be too short for someone taller than 6-foot-3 inches

The best drop-in bathtub
American Standard Evolution Bathtub

The American Standard Evolution Bathtub is a drop-in model that combines an extra deep bathing pool with a functional ergonomic design.

The main thing to point out about this bathtub is its size. If you're looking for a deep bathtub with more legroom than standard options, you're not going to beat the American Standard Evolution Bathtub.

Its bathing pool allows for 18.5 inches of water, so you'll be able to easily submerge yourself if you prefer. Secondly, at 72 inches in length (6 feet), the American Standard Evolution Bathtub is a long bathtub, and a great choice for taller people who have trouble finding bathtubs that provide the legroom they want. This size, combined with its molded armrests and 25-degree slope for reclining all add up to an ultra-comfortable bathtub.

The American Standard Evolution Bathtub is made of acrylic and fiberglass, and at 73 pounds, makes for a lightweight bathtub. Acrylic also does a great job of retaining heat, keeping your water hotter for longer. The glossy finish gives the Evolution Bathtub an attractive appearance, and its smooth, sloping contours give it a pleasing, minimalist style.

Some people complain about acrylic and fiberglass tubs having a flimsy, hollow feel to them, but that's usually because they were not installed properly. If you set your bathtub on a bed of mortar when dropping it into your platform or structure, it will harden to create a nice firm base for the bathtub. This will reduce any flex or give you might get from a tub that is just suspended in the air.

The American Standard also has a slip-resistant floor for safety. One downside is that the width of the American Standard Evolution Bathtub is similar to regular sized tubs, so it might not be wide enough for you, depending on your body size.

Pros: Modern, streamlined appearance; very deep, long enough for taller people

Cons: Depth could be a problem for children or older people, may not be wide enough for larger bathers

The best soaking tub
Woodbridge bathtub

By consistently maintaining water temperature with its double-walled design, the Woodbridge 67-inch Freestanding Soaking Tub provides comfort for a leisurely soak.

If you're primarily interested in using your tub for long, relaxing soaks, then the Woodbridge 67-inch Freestanding Soaking Tub is a great choice.

Maybe it was because it was the end of a long day, but out of all the bathtubs I tested, this was the one that made me want to climb inside as soon as I saw it. Unlike a lot of other modern-style bathtubs that are only nice to look at, the soft curves and rounded edges of the sleek Woodbridge Soaking Tub create a cozy, inviting bathtub.

Maintaining a steady water temperature is essential for soaking tubs, and the double-walled acrylic design of the Woodbridge Tub provides excellent insulation. Reinforced by fiberglass, this dual-walled design does add some weight to the Woodbridge, but that is also the reason it feels sturdier than other acrylic tubs.

Often when freestanding acrylic tubs like this feel less sturdy than cast iron or Americast, it is because of improper installation. If installed correctly, and you really silicone this bathtub to the floor properly — I recommend GE Advanced Silicone — it should feel rock solid, especially after filling with a couple hundred pounds of water.

At 67 inches across the top, and a bathing floor of 45 inches, the Woodbridge 67-inch Freestanding Soaking Tub should have plenty of room for most people to relax in without feeling cramped. Its 23-inch sides have a nice gentle slope, and when you slide down into the bathtub, they create a cozy barrier. That said, it's not one of those huge soaking tubs, so it might not be large enough for two people.

I'm a big fan of freestanding tubs with no feet like this one — though it does have small hidden feet for making leveling adjustments. Since you don't have to worry about cleaning underneath it, a quick wipedown of the glossy acrylic is all it takes to keep it looking great.

Keep in mind, a freestanding tub like this will require a separate filling faucet, so that will need to be purchased separately. Woodbridge does offer its own faucet as an additional add-on, but in my experience, it's a small faucet that takes a very long time to fill such a large tub.

Pros: Elegant appearance, double-wall construction for insulation, good price

Cons: Could be considered small for a soaking tub, additional freestanding faucet needed

The best claw-foot bathtub
Sinkology tub

The claw-footed Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub is striking and luxurious. It transforms an ordinary bathroom into an elegant retreat.

If you want something eye-catching and unconventional in a freestanding tub, go for the Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub. Visually, this gorgeous tub evokes a totally different feeling than a typical white bathtub. Its handcrafted design makes it less of an appliance and more of an example of artisanal craftsmanship.

I'll be honest, the first time I saw this tub, I wasn't impressed. But the more I touched and appreciated its craftsmanship, the more it grew on me. Traditional porcelain clawfoot tubs can have a sterile look to them, and the Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub has a totally different personality and warmth to it.

The Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub has a slipper design, meaning that one end is higher and more sloped than the other, providing extra back support for comfortable lounging. It's 62-inch long bowl floor makes it easier for taller people to stretch their legs out all the way.

The copper construction of the Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub isn't just eye-catching, it's also functional. Copper is a great conductor of heat, which means that when warm water heats the bottom of the bathtub, that heat will quickly spread to the rest of the tub. This effect also helps the water retain its temperature longer.

The Sinkology Heisenberg Copper Bathtub also really durable. With no porcelain or enamel to chip, it's practically impossible to damage this bathtub. Its extreme malleability means that it will also never crack like other, more brittle materials like fiberglass, and its irregular surface hides any dents or dings you might cause. Keeping the copper finish is simple too. Sinkology recommends cleaning with water, regular soap, and a cloth or sponge after usage. Avoid harsh chemicals or acidic products.

This bathtub weighs in at a hefty 300 pounds, so if it's going upstairs you'll be spending some money on the labor getting it up there. I would also recommend checking with plumbers in your area to make sure they'll do it. I know a couple that are just tired of manhandling copper and cast-iron tubs and just won't do it anymore.

Pros: Striking appearance, quality hand craftsmanship, good water temperature maintenance

Cons: Pricey, very heavy, sensitive to acidic cleaners

The best corner bathtub
Kohler bathtub

You don't need to sacrifice tub size while conserving space with the Kohler Proflex Corner Bathtub.

If you're looking for a comfortable corner soaking tub that doesn't take up half your bathroom, the Kohler Proflex Corner Bathtub is a great solution. Its exocrylic construction traps and holds heat effectively, and also makes for a lightweight, modern-looking tub.

Visually, The Kohler Proflex Corner Bathtub has nice clean lines to it, and its molded armrests and lumbar support make it more ergonomic than a traditional bathtub. You probably won't be able to stretch out as much as you would in a regular bathtub, but the triangular shape creates more of a "hot tub" feel, allowing for more variety in how you position yourself. The Kohler Proflex Corner Bathtub is especially good for bathing little kids in since there are more areas to move around and play in.

Another great feature of the Kohler Proflex Corner Bathtub is its weight. At only 51 pounds, this bathtub is much easier to install than most others, particularly when it comes to maneuvering around smaller, cramped bathrooms. Unlike heavier materials that can weigh hundreds of pounds and cost hundreds of extra dollars just to carry from the curb to your bathroom, the Kohler can easily be carried up a flight of stairs by two adults. Of course, depending on your staircase, its shape can potentially cause other issues.

Pros: Spacious yet space-saving, can be more functional than a regular-shaped bathtub, lightweight

Cons: Can be tight for two larger people, irregular shape may cause issues

What to consider when shopping for a new bathtub

Bathtubs are constructed of various materials, like acrylic, porcelain on stainless steel or cast iron, solid surface resin, copper, stone (e.g., marble), and even wood. But what really sets models apart are their types, which include:

  • Alcove: Commonly used in homes, the alcove tub is installed against the three walls within a bathroom's recessed area. Usually, the tub's fourth side (the skirt or apron) is exposed. Affordable, family-friendly, and space-efficient, this model can be used for general bathing and showering.
  • Drop-in: Named after its method of installation, this model is dropped into a pre-existing structure. At least three of the tub's four walls are covered by the structure, which is more decorative (e.g., tiled to match the rest of the bathroom's decor) than the tub itself. Depending on the structure's design, one side of the tub — covered by a finished skirt — might be exposed. Drop-in bathtubs can be set in a structure within an alcove, along a single wall, or in a corner. These tubs are easier to clean and since they're not limited by alcoves, you have a lot more shape and size options to choose from.
  • Corner: Designed to fit into a bathroom's corner, this type of tub can save space, utilize unused space, and provide a comfortable and cozy (think: heart-shaped tub for two) place to stretch out. Corner tubs can be drop-in or freestanding models. Style-wise, corner tubs can sometimes look a bit dated, so make sure to take the time to make sure it matches the style of the rest of your bathroom.
  • Freestanding: Often the focal point of the bathroom, freestanding tubs are large (take up lots of space), heavy (your floor must be able to support it when filled with water), and often elegant (here's the payoff). This model has the most flexibility of location. Although it can to be positioned in an alcove or corner, it usually sits away from the bathroom walls, sometimes even in the center of the room. Freestanding tubs can stand directly on the floor, on a low pedestal, or for a truly vintage decorative look, claw feet.
  • Soaking: If you want to immerse yourself — not just splash in a quick bath — look for a soaking tub. At least 20 inches high but often more, this model is taller than a standard-size bathtub (around 14 to 18 inches) and designed for the average adult to lie down, relax, and be covered almost completely (obviously the head needs to stay out) with water. Luxurious and soothing, soaking tubs are large and heavy.

Other tubs with more bells and whistles include the walk-in tub, designed with a sealing door for elderly or physically disabled people unable to climb into a regular bathtub; the whirlpool, with therapeutic water jets for massage; the air tub, similar to a whirlpool but shoots air bubbles instead of water; and a combination whirlpool/air tub.

Regardless of type of bathtub you shop for, remember to consider these important factors:

  • Size: How much room do you have to fit it? Unless you're planning on a significant bathroom remodel, you should try and get the same size tub as your old one. Even small differences in size and shape can require pretty serious adjustments to things like flooring and tile work.
  • Weight: Make sure the bathroom floor can support the weight of the new tub. This is especially important when your new tub is a different style than your current tub. Just because the size dimensions fit, doesn't mean it will weigh the same. I've worked on several jobs where a new tub was ordered and the homeowners did not realize their new tub would require additional support, a task that can be very expensive.
  • Location: Where do you plan to put it? In the corner, tucked in an alcove, against a wall, away from any walls, or in the middle of the bathroom?
  • Plumbing placement: Your tub's location will be limited by your bathroom's plumbing rough-in. With a skirted tub, you need to pay attention to the tub drain's location (on the right or left side or the end) to make sure it will fit with the rough-in.
  • Use: Will it be used for quick washes or long soaks? Does your household have bathers of different ages and sizes or just adults? If considering a larger soaking tub, make sure your existing water heater is able to supply all the hot water you'll need. If it can't — and you're dead set on a big tub — you'll either need to buy a new water heater or add a secondary heater.
  • Ergonomics: How is climbing in and out of the tub? Is it comfortable to sit up and/or lie down in? If you want a place to put bath items like soap, shampoo bottles, loofah sponges, and back scrubbers, does it have a convenient place like a ledge? While researching this article I climbed in and out of dozens of bathtubs at showrooms in my area, and was surprised to see that most customers were satisfied with merely running their hand along the bathtub edge as their "test." This is a big investment, so climb in, lay down, curl up, bring a magazine, don't be shy.

How to make the perfect cheese board for any special event

Cheese Boards 2
A cheese board can — and should — include more than just cheese.
  • Cheese boards are an exciting, versatile addition to any party, no matter how casual or formal.
  • There are no hard and fast rules for creating a cheese plate, but you can impress your guests by featuring cheeses with contrasting or a similar variety of flavors.
  • Tyler Frankenberg, customer experience manager at Murray's Cheese shop in New York City, recommended portioning out one ounce to 1.5 oz of each cheese per person.
  • The mantra "What grows together, goes together" can help you select meats, nuts, fruits, and other accompaniments that will match well with your cheeses.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The cheese plate is, without a doubt, everyone's favorite guest at a party. It's approachable, welcoming, and, above all, always different. Plus, it's incredibly versatile, whether it's at a casual picnic in the park or a formal (socially distanced) garden party.

Crafting the perfect cheese plate is easier than you may think. There are ways to make the dish artful — one that balances flavors, textures, and has depth and range. You can elevate your plate to the highest form with complementary meats, fruits, spreads, and crackers, or you can have it be as simple as three to four cheeses. There really is no wrong way to do a cheese plate.

We spoke to Tyler Frankenberg, customer experience manager at the famous Murray's Cheese shop in New York City, for his tips on how to begin to flex your cheese muscles and craft a wow-worthy plate.

"I get asked all the time at the pairing classes I teach whether it's okay to mix and match the cheeses and accompaniments, and my answer is 'absolutely yes,'" he told Business Insider. "The guidelines I'm offering should help you arrive at the most enjoyable pairings, but that's not to say your favorite pairing is 'wrong' if it 'breaks the rules."

The only "right" answer when pairing cheeses and accompaniments, Frankenberg said, is what's most enjoyable to you. In a nutshell, don't worry, don't overthink. Just slice, spread, and smile.

It all starts (but doesn't end) with taste

The Mother's Day sampler from Murray's Cheese which features 3 pounds of assorted cheeses.
The Mother's Day sampler from Murray's Cheese features three pounds of assorted cheeses.

Believe it or not, there are only five tastes that our taste buds can perceive: sweet, savory (salty), sour (tart/tangy), bitter, and umami. Everything else that we experience as "flavor" is contributed by our sense of smell. (Test it out: Hold your nose the next time you taste something and you'll see how muted it becomes).

"These five tastes are just the starting point when balancing a cheese plate," Frankenberg said. "We want to taste with all of our senses, including smell, sight, touch, and sometimes even sound, in the case of crunchy crackers, cornichons, or the amino acid crystals that form in very firm cheese."

Setting the tone: casual or formal?

Alp Blossom 2
The Alp Blossom, here topped with honeycomb, is one of Murray's fancier cheeses and coated with a mix of marigold, rose, and lavender petals.

When it comes to cheese, there can absolutely be a vibe. It can be as unbuttoned as Ritz crackers and cheddar, or you can elevate the experience to a decadent and formal affair.

For a more casual cheese, Frankenberg recommended Aged Manchego, La Tur, or Cabot Clothbound cheddar.

"They are produced year-round with balanced, consistent, and familiar flavors, so they'll be a hit at any gathering," he said. These also offer a bit more bang for your buck, which is always something to keep in mind when shopping for a crowd.

If you're ready to make your cheese plate a bit more haute, try fancier cheeses. "I think of formal cheeses as those I might have to put a bit more effort into appreciating because they're only seasonally available, or because their flavors vary seasonally," Frankenberg said.

He recommended Uplands Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Jasper Hill Harbison, and Montgomery's Cheddar. "They are made with great care for the terroir of where they come from — the unique 'taste of place' that changes seasonally with the climate and their animals' diets," he said.

How to select complementary cheeses

Virtual Cheese Tasting
A cheese plate is not an exact science — a mix of either similar or contrasting flavors can both work.

When selecting which cheeses to display, should they all be of a similar family, or is it better to play off of contrasting flavors? Again, there's no wrong answer.

"Contrast pairings are a very straightforward way to highlight the unique notes that contribute to your cheese's flavor profile, as well as deliver a uniquely satisfying experience with every cheese on the plate," Frankenberg said.

For example, if one cheese has a light and smooth texture with a clean and tangy flavor profile, another cheese can swing more firm and fudgy, with strong aromas and flavors. For these contrasts, he recommended pairing Westfield Farm Capri with a Der Scharfe Maxx Extra.

"It doesn't have to be 'opposites attract,' though," he added. "If you love Brie and want to take your appreciation to the next level, try a plate of three to five different bloomy-rinded cheeses and explore their similarities until you can distinguish the nuances between them."

One thing that's important is to order cheese from least to most aggressive flavor — "From mild to wild," as they say at Murray's. "Offer palate cleansers like slices of fresh baguette or a wholesome cracker so that the flavor of each cheese stands on its own as much as possible," Frankenberg said.

How to portion your cheeses

Cheese also goes great with any type of wine
Cheese also goes great with any type of wine.

After choosing about three to five cheeses of a variety of milk types and styles, Frankenberg recommended portioning out one ounce to 1.5 oz of each cheese per person for a guided tasting. If you're hosting a casual get-together instead, you can easily double those portions.

Serving the plate at room temperature is the best way to get maximum flavor. For hard cheese, pull them out of the fridge an hour before serving, and set the softer cheeses out a half hour before. Adjust accordingly if it's a warm day.

Adding meat to a cheese plate

Cheese and Wine 2
Thin cuts of meat like salami, prosciutto, or jamon serrano offer a hearty addition to a cheese plate.

A cheese plate can sing beautifully all on its own, but pairing cheese with a delicious selection of meat can absolutely raise the bar and bring a whole new series of experiences.

Pairing meat with cheese isn't all that different from pairing cheeses with each other. Remember that contrasting or comparing textures and flavors enhance the experience.

"I love pairing Alp Blossom with Duck Mousse pate because the cheese's firm, consistent paste and light, clean, floral flavor profile contrasts so well with the pate's smooth, rich texture and fatty, gamy notes," Frankenberg said.

He recommended the mantra, "What grows together, goes together" — meaning meats and cheeses (or wines, nuts, fruits, etc.) that come from the same region and are products of the same genealogy, climate, cultural, and agricultural tradition, often centuries or millennia of shared evolution.

"More often than not, this means they're going to taste great paired together."

Try, he suggested, a Basque cheese like Ossau-Iraty or Pyrenees Brebis alongside Jambon de Bayonne, or have Pecorino Toscano with wild boar salami.

What about fruits, nuts, and spreads?

Cheese boards 3
Finger fruits, like grapes, are an easy add to balance the heavier flavors on a cheese plate.

Absolutely! Why not add more flavors, textures, aromas, and colors to the table?

"Choosing what exactly to have is a matter of rounding out the representation of those tastes we perceive with our taste buds and adding additional textural elements to the mix," Frankenberg said.

Take feta and marinated olives, for example. They balance each other out beautifully. "Nuts like walnuts or Marcona almonds also tend to bring a nice smack of umami and sometimes a hint of bitterness to the table, and can be an especially textural contrast with sweet, buttery triple cream cheeses like Nettle Meadow Kunik," Frankenburg said.

The cracker isn't an afterthought

More than just a vehicle for your cheese, the cracker is just as important as the rest of the plate because it's a great palate cleanser in between cheese and accompaniments.

"Crackers add a crispy or crunchy texture that you won't find in any cheese, and therefore adds a contrast element," Frankenberg said. "A flavorful cracker can be another solid pairing in its own right."

Choose a cracker that's simple, like a sea salt flatbread that's made to go with cheese. He recommended brands like Firehook or Onesto — both are wholesome, sturdy, and flavorful without being overpowering. Onesto happens to be gluten-free and vegan as well.

Creating a cheese plate isn't a perfect science. As long as you cater the dish to you and your guests' own tastes and preferences, it's sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the new edition of Insider Today. Please sign up here.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"They want to enslave you to the weak, dependent, liberal victim ideology to the point that you will not recognize this country or yourself." — Kimberly Guilfoyle, Trump campaign fundraiser and Donald Trump Jr.'s girlfriend, speaking at the RNC last night about Democrats.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Melania Trump
First Lady Melania Trump speaks at the Department of Justice National Opioid Summit in Washington, DC on March 6, 2020.

Melania Trump and Mike Pompeo will speak tonight at the GOP convention. Last night's speeches featured the Donald Trump Jr., Tim Scott, the McCloskeys, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, and focused on the culture war.

Jacob Blake is paralyzed from the waist down, according to his father. The Sunday shooting of Blake by Kenosha, Wisconsin, police officers has sparked protests, which have been met with tear gas.

FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn apologized for exaggerating the benefits of convalescent plasma. Hahn and Trump both wildly misinterpreted the data about plasma, which the FDA gave emergency approval to this weekend despite scantly clinical evidence.

Jerry Falwell Jr. has resigned as president of Liberty University. He's involved in a bizarre sex and payoff scandal involving his wife and a much younger man. Falwell initially agreed to leave, reneged, and then announced his exit on Tuesday after negotiating with Liberty's board.

VIEWS OF THE DAY

Mitt Romney
Sen. Mitt Romney

Who's not at the RNC? Just about every Republican who mattered for the last 25 years.

In 2020, the Republican Party has no platform except Trumpism. The best way to appreciate  just how completely Trump has remade the GOP is to make a list of recent Republican Party leaders — the people who defined the party for the last generation — and see what they're doing this week.

Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee before Trump, won't speak at the RNC and isn't welcome. In fact, he's loathed.

John McCain, the nominee before that, is dead, but his widow Cindy spoke at the DNC, and it's clear John McCain would not have been welcome at Trump's convention.

George W. Bush, the last Republican president, won't speak at the RNC, doesn't want to be there, and probably isn't welcome.

Dick Cheney, the last GOP vice president, won't speak either. (Cheney's daughter Liz, the third-ranking House Republican, won't speak and doesn't seem welcome.)

Paul Ryan, the last Republican Speaker of the House, won't speak and has vanished from politics.

John Boehner, the Republican speaker before that, won't speak and is revolted by what's happened to his party

Rex Tillerson, the Trump's first secretary of state, won't speak and isn't welcome.

Condoleeza Rice, the last GOP secretary of state before that, won't speak and isn't welcome.

Colin Powell, the GOP secretary of state before that, won't speak and isn't welcome, and just addressed the DNC.

Michael Steele, the last RNC chair before Trump, won't speak and isn't welcome, and just joined the Lincoln Project to defeat Trump.

Trump leads an ostensibly conservative party, yet it conserves so little. — DP

Guilfoyle
Kimberly Guilfoyle, the National Chair of the "Trump Victory Finance Committee" and girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr., delivers a pre-recorded speech to the largely virtual 2020 Republican National Convention, from Washington, DC, August 24, 2020.

RNC Night 1: Apocalypse Guilfoyle

Kimberly Guilfoyle, one of the Trump campaign's chief fundraisers, gave an RNC speech the boss could be proud of.

In my new column, I argue that Guilfoyle's speech was bombastically unhinged and factually-bereft, and commanded the audience to view Democrats as an existential threat to their lives.

Think I'm exaggerating? Here's an excerpt from half-way through the six-minute speech:

"They want to destroy this country and everything that we have fought for and hold dear. They want to steal your liberty, your freedom. They want to control what you see and think and believe so that they can control how you live. They want to enslave you to the weak, dependent, liberal victim ideology to the point that you will not recognize this country or yourself."

Steal. Control. Enslave.

Totally healthy rhetoric coming from a primetime speaker at one of the US' two major political parties' conventions.

Guilfoyle — formerly a Fox News host, prosecutor and first lady of San Francisco, and current girlfriend of Donald Trump, Jr. —  wasn't quite through painting the upcoming election as a scorched-earth war of attrition:

"Don't let [the Democrats] step on you. Don't let them destroy your families, your lives, and your future. Don't let them kill future generations because they told you and brainwashed you and fed you lies that you weren't good enough."

Destroy. Kill. Brainwash.

To be clear, Democrats spent last week painting Trump as an existential threat to the country's future, but they at least had some evidence to work with. The US remains crippled by the coronavirus pandemic, thanks in no small part to Trump's disastrous response, which included politicizing the use of masks, attacking states who locked-down at the beginning of the crisis, and putting his crony son-in-law Jared Kushner and his rich-kid buddies in charge of securing PPE.

The results speak for themselves. Double-digit unemployment. The most devastating rate of coronavirus infections and deaths of any rich country in the world. Trump's managed to make a US passport essentially worthless. (We can't even go to Canada.)

So while the Democrats exaggerated (sometimes called "lying") plenty during their four-day infomercial, none of the DNC speakers came close to the apocalyptic rhetoric of Guilfoyle

And that was only night one. — Anthony Fisher

A married couple, identified as Mark and Patricia McCloskey, pointed guns at protesters from the front lawn of their St. Louis home on June 28, 2020.

Won't you be my neighbor?

The most racist portion of last night's RNC was a sit down with the McCloskeys, the St. Louis couple who brandished weapons to warn protesters away from their mansion during Black Lives Matter protests.

Mark and Patricia were there to represent "quiet neighborhoods around the country" and the people who populate them — people concerned about violent protests and "Marxist liberal activists… walking the halls of Congress." The speech was one long racist dog whistle.

The chat was one part Saturday Night Live skit, one part time machine. Trump often talks of his base wishing to return to a bygone era, and the McCloskeys took us to 1988, when George HW Bush turned Willie Horton — a Massachusetts prisoner who raped a woman and bound and stabbed her boyfriend while out on furlough from prison — into a campaign issue.

None of this is surprising coming from the Trump campaign, even though Trump had promised a more positive, upbeat RNC. Racism was always going to be the message: What's disturbing is who the GOP thinks is an adequate messenger. There is no way you would want the McCloskeys to be your neighbors — a profile of them from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch illustrates why. They have no decency.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • The McCloskeys have "quiet title" suits asserting squatter's rights on land they've "occupied openly and hostilely."
  • They are suing their neighborhood group, the Portland Place trustees, claiming they are entitled to a 1,000-plus-square foot triangle of land in front of their property set aside from public use.
  • In 2012 Mark McCloskey sued his father (who was sick in a nursing home), his sister, and his father's caretaker for defamation. He dropped the suit in 2013. His father died in 2014.
  • Mark McCloskey was written out of his father's will, but he sued for part of what his father left behind anyway. He got $400,000 from his siblings and they do not speak to him.
  • In 2013 Mark destroyed beehives built by the Jewish Central Reform Congregation next door. He left a note claiming responsibility and threatening to sue if the hives were replaced. The Synagogue had planned to harvest the honey and eat it during Rosh Hashana.
  • The McCloskeys have been accused by members of their neighborhood group of trying to enforce arcane rules to keep gay couples out of the neighborhood.

I could go on, because it's a stunning (Trumpian, even) legal record. But it's upsetting and you need to get on with your day.

If these are the kind of people you'd want in your neighborhood, good luck and God bless. In more normal times, it's hard to see these people getting a spot in a national convention. But these are not normal times. Before, Republicans at least wanted to seem like decent people representing decent people — but decent people the McCloskeys are not. That used to matter. Trump coronavirus test swab
Trump pretends to take a COVID-19 test while holding a swab during his visit of the Puritan Medical Products facility in Guilford, Maine on June 5, 2020.

The president needs to stop overhyping COVID treatments.

On Sunday, the FDA and the president touted wildly misleading data about convalescent plasma to justify their approval of the COVID treatment for emergency use. As the New York Times details in this story, FDA leaders and the president claimed the plasma cut COVID deaths 35%, which is not even remotely true.

Rather, in one small subset of patients, those who received plasma with higher levels of antibodies died at a lower rate than those who received plasma with lower levels of antibodies. What they said was so completely wrong, in fact, that FDA chief Stephen Hahn tweeted an apology on Monday for misrepresenting the data.

This episode should alarm anyone who hopes the Trump administration can administer a successful vaccination campaign. Once again (see: hydroxychloroquine), the Trump COVID team has approached public health as a form of marketing — acting as if their job is to sell plasma, not stop the pandemic.

Trump's greatest skill is hype, but hype is the enemy of public health. The job of public health officials is to build trust, so that the citizens believe what their government is telling them, and then act responsibly. Tony Fauci's straightforward, realistic style grates on the president, who only likes to hear good news. But that kind of harsh honesty encourages listeners to actually believe what you're saying.

Hype builds false expectations — deaths down 35%! — and when the treatment fails to meet them, the public is disillusioned, and less likely to trust the next claim you make.

With a vaccine, this could be disastrous. As vaccine experts say: Vaccines don't work. Vaccination works. If you create a safe and effective vaccine but citizens refuse to take it, you've failed. Each time the Trump administration oversells a COVID treatment, it makes the public more and more skeptical, and less and less likely to trust a vaccine. —DP

Colombia says it captured a narco sub carrying a ton of cocaine for Mexico's rising Jalisco cartel

Colombia narco sub
A suspected drug-running vessel stopped by Colombian authorities, August 24, 2020.
  • Colombian authorities intercepted a "narco sub" of the country's southwest coast, officials said Monday.
  • The vessel was carrying a metric ton of cocaine and was heading for Mexico, the home turf of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, to which the submersible belonged, officials said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Colombian anti-drug police have seized a semi-submersible narco-submarine they say belongs to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and was headed to Mexico.

On board was more than a metric ton of cocaine valued at US $18.6 million, officials in Bogotá said on Monday.

Colombia's anti-narcotics police and the navy intercepted the vessel 46 nautical miles off the coast of Tumaco, Nariño. Three men were arrested.

Officials said "this semi-submersible, which would have an approximate cost of $1.2 million, has a cargo capacity of up to three tonnes and has a satellite navigation system that, according to the investigations, would allow it to reach its destination in Costa Careyes in the Mexican state of Jalisco by the first week of September."

Narco-submarines are rarely fully submersible but designed to run so low in the water that they are difficult to detect.

Intelligence and investigations by Colombia's National Police during what was deemed "Operation Triton" revealed that the shipment was the property of the Colombian criminal syndicate E-30, which is suspected of mass murders and forced displacements in the area, and was destined for the CJNG.

The Mexican cartel has long been tied to Colombia, the world's leading producer and exporter of cocaine to America, Europe, Asia and Africa. They are particularly associated with the National Liberation Army (ELN), a communist guerrilla movement engaged in cocaine production, international drug smuggling and money laundering which has in the past offered protection to cocaine shipments traveling north.

Colombian police and military authorities told the newspaper El Universal that there is an incessant deployment of Mexican drug traffickers in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Central America to direct the production, transportation, distribution and commercialization of cocaine in small and large shipments.

While fast boats were once the preferred vehicle for moving drugs into the United States, methods of detection by law enforcement have improved, and cartels have been forced to get creative.

The first drug-laden submarine was discovered off the coast of Costa Rica in 2006, and over the years they have grown more sophisticated and some even have the capacity to be truly submersible and cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The largest shipment ever seized from a narco-submarine occurred in 2015. It was carrying 7.7 tonnes of cocaine.

In December 2019, a submarine bound for Mexico carrying over a tonne of cocaine was intercepted off the coast of Peru. In May of this year, US authorities seized three semi-submersible submarines over the course of just four days.

Odds of a Biden presidency are rising according to this stock signal, and a win would pose few risks to the market, LPL says

Former Vice President Joe Biden
Former Vice President Joe Biden
  • One stock market signal is pointing to rising odds of a Joe Biden presidency, according to a note published by LPL on Monday.
  • And if Biden does win and become president next year, the risks to the market will be minimal, and no more than the risks posed to the market under an Obama presidency, LPL said.
  • "We do not see a particularly strong reason to fear a Biden presidency from a market perspective today," LPL said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Joe Biden's chances in the poll booth this November are on the rise, according to one stock market signal.

In a note published on Monday, LPL highlighted that a basket of stocks perceived to perform well under a Joe Biden presidency are outperforming a basket of stocks perceived to perform well under a second-term Donald Trump presidency.

Citing data from Strategas Research Partners, LPL showed that the Joe Biden stock portfolio has reached its highest level of relative outperformance to the Donald Trump stock portfolio since February 2020 in recent weeks.

The relative outperformance signals that the market may increasingly view a Biden presidency as likely, though LPL does acknowledge that the individual stocks within the portfolios are driven by other factors as well.

Read moreMorgan Stanley breaks down 3 reasons stocks could be headed for a short-term correction as the market gets dragged higher by a few big winners

lpl election chart.JPG

If Biden does win the upcoming November election, the chances of the Democrats flipping the Senate from red to blue are above 50%, according to LPL.

And in a scenario where the Democrats control the House, the Senate, and the presidency come January 2021, Joe Biden will have more freedom to pass his agenda, which can have a direct impact on the economy, and ultimately the stock market.

A recent research note from Liberum showed that the economy and stock market do significantly better under a Democratic president than under a Republican president, as Democratic policy initiatives to stimulate consumption via expanded unemployment benefits and food stamps have a bigger economic impact than Republican initiatives of tax cuts and deregulation.

LPL said it believes that risks to the stock market are few, and investors should not sell their stocks based on whether Biden or Trump wins the November election.

"We foresee some market risks in a Biden presidency, but no more than in an Obama presidency, which had a strong stock market record," LPL concluded.

And while one stock market signal is pointing to rising odds of a Biden presidency, another is still pointing to a Trump presidency. Generally, a rising stock market in the three months prior to the presidential election helps the incumbent party, while the opposite is true for a falling market.

Since the three-month clock started ticking on August 3, stocks, as measured by the S&P 500, are up 4% as of Monday's close, representing a benefit to President Trump's re-election chances.

Jeep is making a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler and it will arrive at dealerships this year

2020 Jeep Wrangler
A 2020 Jeep Wrangler. Imagine this (probably), but a... plug-in hybrid.
  • FCA CEO Mike Manley said the plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Wrangler will be officially unveiled during Q3 during a shareholder meeting, according to MotorTrend.
  • In a tweet from the official Jeep Twitter account, the Wrangler 4xe appears to have silent, EV-only driving capabilities.
  • The Wrangler 4xe could have up to 31 miles of all-electric driving, MotorTrend estimated.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

So far, Fiat Chrysler's electrified offerings in the United States have lagged behind the competition. But we can soon expect the plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Wrangler, reports MotorTrend

Following a 2020 FCA annual shareholder meeting, the outlet's Alisa Priddle reported that the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid will be globally unveiled during the third quarter of 2020, according to CEO Mike Manley.

Manley said, "The vehicle will arrive in our showrooms in the [US] by the end of this year and in Europe and China early next year."

The official Jeep Twitter account tweeted a short teaser on August 22.

Notice that Jeep is playing up the silent driving factor here — which surely indicates that the upcoming Wrangler 4xe will have an EV-only driving mode.

Not much else about the new model is known, officially. But being a plug-in hybrid, it'll obviously have some kind of electric motor working in conjunction with its gasoline engine. MotorTrend guessed that the electric motor would be matched with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the existing Wrangler and that the 4xe will produce up to 31 miles of EV-only driving.

A Jeep spokesperson didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for additional information.

Currently, FCA's only electrified offerings include the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan and the Fiat 500e, the latter of which was discontinued last year. The automaker has said it will commit to launching 30 electrified models by 2022, according to MotorTrend.

woman using computer at home
It's easy to password protect a folder in Windows 10.
  • To password protect a folder in Windows 10, you'll need to open the folder's "Properties" menu.
  • There's no way to recover a folder's password if you forget it, so make sure you write the password down somewhere.
  • Before you password protect a folder, you should copy the files within to an external hard drive or other source, so you can still access them if you lose the password.
  • You can only password protect folders in the Pro version of Windows 10 — it's not available in Windows 10 Home.
  • Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference for more stories.

In nearly all cases, you can only access folders on a Windows computer once you're logged into your user account. But if multiple people use the same account on your computer — maybe you share it with your family — this leaves your folders open for snooping.

There's dozens of apps that let you encrypt your folders. But luckily, Windows offers its own built-in options for password protecting folders.

It's totally free and easy to password protect a folder in Windows. However, there are a few downsides.

The first is that you need to be running Windows 10 Pro — Home version won't let you. The second is that once you set the password, there's no way to recover it if you forget it.

Here's how to password protect a folder on your PC.

The best robot vacuums

  • A high-quality robot vacuum should be easy to schedule, pick up debris from a variety of surfaces, and run quietly while going about its work.
  • The robot vacuums in our guide performed well in our tests, have useful features that go beyond regular vacuuming, and are designed to make cleaning your floors as easy as possible.
  • The Roborock S6 Robot Vacuum is our top pick because it has unparalleled suction, accurately maps your home so you can set boundaries for where you want it to clean, and automatically adjusts its suction to accommodate carpet, hardwood, and more.
  • Read more: The best vacuums you can buy and The best robot vacuum deals happening now

Few find joy in vacuuming — I know I don't. But if it's not done often, dirt and dust can accumulate and allergens can get out of hand. Fortunately, robot vacuums can help make the chore a lot easier, which has improved my quality of life immensely.

After testing more than a dozen robotic vacuums in just the last year and researching upwards of 20, we've picked the Roborock S6 Robot Vacuum as the best robot vacuum for its powerful suction, accurate mapping, and smart adjusting function that accommodates different types of flooring and carpeting.

There are several tests I put each unit through, and for models that I have personally not tested, I extrapolate the key performance indicators based on our team's reviews as well as the testing results from trustworthy sites. You can check out our full testing methodology over here.

Here are the best robot vacuums:

Prices and links are current as of 8/25/2020. We are currently testing additional robot vacuums for a larger update to our guide.

The best overall
Best robot vacuums

The Roborock S6 Robot Vacuum has the best suction of any robotic vacuum we've tested, features zoned cleaning, and runs quietly.

The best robot vacuum for most people at the moment is the Roborock S6, overtaking our previous favorite, the iRobot Roomba 690. I've tested the S5, E35, S6, and S4, and the suction of these units is consistently better than any other brands on both hardwood and carpeting. I'm surprised Roborock's offerings aren't included in more guides to the best robotic vacuums.

I chose to give the S6 the top spot because it is Roborock's top-of-the-line model and has all of the features you'd find in more expensive robots, including zoned cleaning, smart connectivity, scheduling, 2,000-Pa suction, and mopping.

Pa is Pascal Pressure Unit, and according to Roborock, the higher the number, the more powerful the suction. Not all manufacturers list this measurement: iRobot told me the spec is not ideal for comparing robot vacuums because the measurement is recorded inconsistently. Although we mention it here and note the Roborock S6's terrific suction power, we did not use the number to determine our pick over another.

Though other expert sites dock Roborock because of the awkward app, I was still impressed with the app's functionality after I got the hang of it, which only took a few minutes of playing around. The biggest negative to me is the 3.8-inch height, which makes it hard for the vacuum to fit under low-clearance furniture. You can read my full review of the S6 here.

Pros: Outstanding suction, accurate mapping and zoned cleaning, carpet boost, runs quietly, smart home connectivity

Cons: Confusing app, larger than other models

The best budget
best robot vacuums eufy

If you are looking for a budget-friendly workhorse and don't need high-end features, the Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S is your best bet.

For its low price tag, the Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S is an outstanding performer with a strong 1,300 Pa of suction and sleek 2.85-inch height that allows it to get into and out of places that most robotic vacuums can't.

It comes with remote control (batteries included), extra filters, extra side brushes, cable ties, and a 12-month warranty. What it doesn't come with are smart features like zoned cleaning or Wi-Fi and Alexa compatibility, but if you're looking for a no-frills vac, this is it.

Insider Reviews freelance reporter Steven John recommends the 11S as a great starter model for people who have considered a robotic vacuum but are concerned about the cost. It quickly became one of the most useful gadgets in his house due to its efficiency, power, and low-profile design. Its nimble, persistent navigation system means the unit rarely needs attention, and the low 55-decibel operation is comparable to a microwave so it won't be a disturbance either. You can read our full review here.

Pros: Slim design fits under low furniture, affordable, cleans quietly, does an excellent job on hardwood floors

Cons: Lacks high-end options like zoned cleaning and smart connectivity, doesn't perform as well on carpeting

The best high-end
Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum is as automated as it gets with automatic dirt disposal and the ability to schedule cleaning sessions of specific rooms.

One of the more annoying maintenance tasks of a robot vacuum is emptying the dustbin after each cleaning. Before the iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum was introduced in the fall of 2018, you had to do it manually. But with the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal, the i7+ transfers its collection to a container in its dock and owners can go up to two months before the disposable bag fills up and needs to be replaced.

The i7+ is operated using an intuitive app that iRobot is always improving, so you can essentially set your Roomba and forget it. This is the best robotic vacuum I've ever used, but it didn't make our top spot because the price point is a bit much. It's come down in the two years since it was introduced, but it's still an expensive unit that cleans incrementally better than our top pick. If your budget allows, you should absolutely consider this on your shortlist. You can read my full review of the i7+ here.

We're currently testing the newer Roomba S9+, which also boasts automatic disposal. That model has 40 times the suction power of the i7+ and "PerfectEdge Technology" that lets it get into hard-to-reach corners and edges. However, it's about $300 more than the i7+. We hope to publish a comparison between the two soon.

Pros: Automatic dirt disposal, zoned cleaning and scheduling, remembers multiple floor plans, avoids areas you want it to avoid

Cons: Expensive, zoned cleaning has questionable accuracy

The best for getting into corners
Best robot vacuum

The Samsung Powerbot R7040 Robot Vacuum has a flat front-edge design that allows it to get deep into corners to destroy your dust bunny burrows.

Despite its mid-range price, the Samsung Powerbot R7040 has many high-end features, including Wi-Fi and smart home connectivity. The flat-front design makes it easy for it to get into corners.

The R7040 uses Samsung's patented FullView Sensor 2.0 and Visionary Mapping Plus, which helps the vacuum avoid obstacles and create an ideal cleaning path. It also comes with remote control and a one-year warranty.

We haven't personally tested this robot vacuum yet, but Consumer Reports recommends the Powerbot R7040 because it did an impressive job in the review site's edge, bare floor, and carpet cleaning tests. It also found the vacuum was gentle with the test furniture, picked up most debris on the first pass, and easily cleaned corners. The only negative mentioned is that the pet hair needed to be cleaned from the brush manually.

Pros: Wi-Fi connectivity, works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, flat front edge design allows it to get into corners

Cons: Pet hair gets stuck on the brush, complaints about the app, short battery runtime

The best D-shaped robot vacuum
neato

The D-shaped Neato Robotics Botvac D7 Connected Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is packed full of high-end features, including extra ultra-performance filters, two-hour runtime, and zone cleaning.

Neato Robotics is unique because it was the first company to make D-shaped vacuums. And, though other manufacturers have started to follow its lead (see Samsung's models and the Roomba s9+), Neato Robotics continues to innovate; the company's top-of-the-line Botvac D7 Connected Robotic Vacuum Cleaner illustrates that.

In my tests, the D7 Connected was easy to program, though I did have trouble keeping it connected to the Wi-Fi at times. The suction was excellent when picking up flour, coffee grounds, kitty litter, and pet hair.

I was also impressed with how quiet it ran: 66 decibels. Plus, it was fun to tell my smart thermostat to have the vacuum start cleaning — thanks, Alexa. You can read my full review here.

Pros: D-shape allows it to clean corners and edges well, elegant app design, zoned cleaning, works with Alexa

Cons: Slow connectivity with the app

What else we've tested
Trifo Max Cleaner 4

We've tested and researched many robot vacuum brands and models while writing this guide. The following six vacuums barely missed the cut:

  • iRobot Roomba 960: The Roomba 960 was among our top recommendations before we updated our guide. It's able to clean large areas without getting caught up on obstacles and debris. The 960 features iRobot's outstanding app with smart controls and maps of where the robot is cleaning. It also has powerful suction and is great with pet hair. However, at its price point, other models have simply surpassed its features.
  • iRobot Roomba 614: The Roomba 614 is similar to the more popular but increasingly harder to find Roomba 690, our previous overall favorite. The big differences are that the 614 is typically cheaper and doesn't have Wi-Fi connectivity or scheduling. However, it still has excellent cleaning abilities on hardwood and carpeting. So, if you're looking for an affordable Roomba and can do without smart features, you might consider the 614.
  • Ecovacs Deebot N79S: The Deebot N79S is a favorite among many owners of robot vacuums. This model provides an outstanding balance of value and high-end features. It comes with a simple remote, or you can control and schedule your unit using the intuitive app. You can also offer vocal commands using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Read our full review here.
  • Neato Botvac D4 Connected: This is Neato Robotics' midrange option. Like the D7 that we recommend, it features a D-shaped design that works great for cleaning along edges and in corners. It's supported by a terrific app that allows you to clean specific zones in your home and set no-go areas. Though it's cheaper than the D7, it doesn't have as good of a filter, lacks a side brush, and has a much shorter battery runtime.
  • ILIFE V8s: The V8s was my first-ever robot vacuum, and it does an outstanding job of mopping and vacuuming at its price point. The cost of this model appears to keep going up. At one point, it was below $200, and if you can find it for that price, I strongly recommend picking it up. I was impressed with how well it does with pet hair, and I like how simple it is to use. You can read my full review here
  • Trifo Max: We loved the power and efficiency of this underrated vacuum, plus it's not too expensive. Unfortunately, we were unable to properly test one of its coolest features — a built-in security camera — because of the inability to connect to Wi-Fi. The rest of the features are still great, but the vacuum clearly isn't perfect. Read our full review here
What else we're testing
Best robot vacuum

We're constantly testing new vacuums. Below are a few models we are currently testing or will be soon:

  • iRobot Roomba s9+: I'm currently testing the s9+, which is designed to address consumer concerns regarding our high-end pick, the Roomba i7+. The upgrades include four times the suction power, a D-shaped design to get along edges and into corners, and a seal between the vacuum and the Clean Base that keeps allergens out of the air. So far, I'm impressed with this unit, though the price is high.
  • Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo 920 and 950: I also currently have these vacuums set up in my home for testing. The Ozmo 920 and 950 are quite similar — smart navigation for zoned cleaning and setting boundaries, smart home compatibility, recharge and resume, and mopping with carpet detection. But the 950 offers you a battery runtime that is nearly twice as long, and it has a third suction level, Max Plus, that outperforms the 920's best.
  • Roborock S4: I'm wrapping up testing of the S4, it's a worthwhile alternative to our top pick, the S6, and it's also cheaper. The S4 appears to have the same suction strength and smart capabilities as the S6. However, it can't mop and its battery runtime isn't as long. Still, if vacuum cleaning abilities on carpeting and wood floors are your top concerns, then you may want to skip the S6 and try the S4.
  • Shark IQ: I'm excited about testing this model because it's the first non-Roomba to features a self-emptying base. Plus, it's half the price of the i7+ so the Shark IQ has the potential for high-end features at a more affordable price.
How we test robot vacuums

Here are the main criteria we look for in robot vacs and how we test them:

Completes cleaning cycle: I can't stand having to hunt down my robot because it got stuck on cords, toys, low-clearance furniture, or other obstacles during its cleaning cycle. So, as the vacuum goes about its work each day, I track the percentage of time it completes the job and returns to its dock without help.

Loudness: For this, I grab my decibel meter and hold it approximately 12 inches away from the vacuum as it runs on its most and least powerful modes. Most models run at under 70 decibels on high, while quieter models at 60 decibels or lower.

Dimensions: One of the great features of a robovac is that it can clean under beds and other furniture that you may have trouble reaching with an upright vacuum. In general, a thinner robot vacuum is more likely to squeeze under your low-clearance furniture without getting stuck.

Maintenance: Robotic vacuums require regular upkeep. For instance, the dustbin needs to be emptied after each cleaning. Every week or two, you should clean the filter. And, every couple of months, you will need to replace filters and brushes. I look at how easy it is to clean different parts of the robot and how easy and affordable it is to buy replacement parts.

Smart features: Wi-Fi connectivity and an app are now common to most new units. I like to play around with the app and pick out the most useful features. Some popular features you might want are scheduled cleaning sessions, zoned cleaning with no-go boundaries, joystick control of where the vacuum cleans, maps that show you where the vacuum is if it gets stuck, and more. I also test to see how well the unit runs without using the app since sometimes you may not have access to your phone.

Carpet cleaning: First, I pour a tablespoon each of flour, coffee grounds, and kitty litter on separate 18-inch-square sections of low-profile carpeting and take a picture of my mess. Then, I have the vacuum run on its most powerful mode until it needs to be recharged. Lastly, I compare the area where my mess was to the before picture and estimate the percentage of debris that the robot picked up.

Hardwood cleaning: This process is the same as the carpet cleaning testing, only on hardwood flooring.

Corner cleaning: You don't want an inch of dust bordering your rooms. You want a vacuum that's going to clean your place from wall to wall. That's why I test corner cleaning. I dust a teaspoon of flour — a notoriously difficult substance for robovacs — in the corner of carpeted and hardwood rooms. I take a picture of the mess. Then, I let the robot work its magic. Once it's done, I look at how close to the corner the vacuum was able to get.

Along with hands-on testing dozens of robot vacuums, we looked at the reviews and ratings of the top models from hundreds of owners and experts as we researched this guide. Our guide features vacuums that performed well in our tests, have useful features that justify their price, and are designed to make cleaning your floors as seamless as possible.

A 2nd coronavirus wave won't stop the stock market's momentum, Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel says

  • Jeremy Siegel, a Wharton finance professor, told CNBC that the stock market would not lose upward momentum if the US were to experience another wave of COVID-19 cases.
  • Siegel said that because stocks are so forward-looking, a short-term lapse in the economy would not stop long-term moves higher.
  • The professor also said he believes both tech stocks and cyclical stocks would go higher in 2021 as US states begin to fully reopen.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Wharton finance professor Jeremy Siegel told CNBC on Tuesday that another wave of coronavirus cases likely wouldn't derail the stock market's march upward.

"We're not anywhere getting near down those March lows. A little pause if we get that wave, but I don't think it's going to really stop the longer-term momentum," Siegel said.

The S&P 500 has rallied more than 55% since its March 23 low. It traded 0.07% higher on Tuesday.

Siegel said that the forward-looking nature of stocks and the continued liquidity provided by the Federal Reserve would be a "really powerful force" for the market's drive. The professor said that even if an effective coronavirus vaccine takes another six months or more, stocks would still move upward in a V-shaped recovery.

"That's why you could have a U economy, a W economy, and you can still have a V stock market, because of that forward-looking component," he said, adding that 90% of the value of a stock depends on its earnings more than 12 months in the future.

He also discussed the popular debate about whether investors should buy more tech stocks or pivot into cyclical stocks as the US begins to recover.

"I think there's room for both groups to go up in 2021," Siegel said.

Siegel said he believes that even if cyclical stocks outperform the market next year, it doesn't mean tech stocks have to go down. The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated to the economy how important tech is, and that's not going away, Siegel said.

The best bed frames

  • Your bed is not only the highlight of your bedroom, it's also the only furniture you spend 33% of your life on.
  • The Zinus Lottie Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is our top pick because it's well-crafted with impressive strength and has an attractive design.
  • If you're looking for a great mattress to put on top of your new bed frame, check out our guide to the best mattresses.

Your bed frame can make or break the overall look and feel of your bedroom. Certain bed frames make the room feel cozier, while others add a bold and modern style. Your mattress certainly matters in terms of comfort, but from a design aspect, your bed frame is the foundation of your bedroom.

Beyond design, bed frames can elevate your sleeping position, ideally making it easier to get in and out of bed. Sometimes they make room for additional storage below your sleeping area or in the headboard. Bed frames also extend the life of your mattress by providing support and preventing weak, sagging spots.

Buying a bed frame may seem simple — just match frame size with mattress size — but there are more buying options than you might realize, which can make the shopping process seem overwhelming. That's why we've compiled this guide to the best bed frames.

Here are the best bed frames:

Prices and links are current as of 8/25/20. Our best canopy bed frame pick is back in stock. We also made the Floyd Platform Bed our new best modular bed frame, following testing.

The best bed frame overall
best bed frame zinus

The Zinus Lottie Upholstered Square Stitched Platform Bed Frame is completely squeakless and it has a classic, timeless look.

The Zinus Lottie Bed Frame is naturally simple with a classic design that we can't see going out of style anytime soon. The plush square-stitched dark gray upholstery adds a soft-to-the-touch design aesthetic to the already handsome piece. It's an all-around high quality, timelessly designed bed frame.

As a cost saver, the headboard, frame, and ten wood slats that support the mattress are included in the price. All purchased parts, including the frame, legs, and wooden slats conveniently fit into the headboard and are shipped that way as well.

It's available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes. The king-size frame stands 14 inches off the ground, providing extra storage space. In other sizes, the frame is eight inches off the ground.

Overall, the Zinus is a bed frame that can blend quietly into the background of a loud bedroom or hold its own as the centerpiece of an otherwise neutral room. The sturdiness and easy setup are two major plusses, and the strong mattress support and soft upholstery complement each other, creating an overall high-quality bed frame we can't help but recommend.

Pros: Very sturdy, helps your mattress last longer, easy assembly, reasonable price, footboard option, adaptable style

Cons: Middle of the bed support may not be the best, shipping issues result in damaged parts a bit too often

The best bed frame on a budget
Zinus_14_Inch_SmartBase_Platform_Bed_Frame_Amazon1

Space is valuable, especially in small apartments, and this Zinus Shawn 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame lets you make the most of it at an affordable price.

If you don't have bedroom space to waste, then a bed frame that provides plenty of under bed storage is the way to go. This Zinus Shawn Bed Frame does just that, as it is raised 14 inches off the ground with 13 inches of clearance, so you can easily store medium to large plastic bins filled with the items you don't need access to daily right under the bed.

It can be purchased as a standard bed frame, a bed frame with a skirt, or a deluxe edition, which has an upgraded design for reinforced stability with t-shape leg construction and a locking system.

The most popular choice is the standard bed frame, which is made from strong, durable steel, and has a unique folding design that makes it easy to move around as needed. Unlike some other models, it's easy to assemble in just two pieces.

The steel bed frame eliminates the need for a box spring and can support spring, memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. We like that it's a rather standard 14-inch height, but if you want even more under bed storage, Zinus also has this very similar 18-inch bed frame model.

There are no bells and whistles to this bed frame, so you can achieve a super minimalist style, or add a headboard of your choice to jazz it up a bit.

While other so-called storage bed frames often have drawers that can be pulled out from the sides or have a compartment under the bed that you can only access by lifting up your mattress, the Zinus 14-inch SmartBase Platform Bed Frame simply provides free space, so you are not as limited by the size of drawers or under bed compartments.

Senior reporter Connie Chen used this frame for 1.5 years and loved the easy assembly and spacious storage for her tiny NYC bedroom.

Pros: Tons of under bed storage, easy to assemble and disassemble, frame keeps things quiet, super affordable price point

Cons: Some mattresses may slip, no clear indication of how much weight it can hold

The best adjustable bed frame
Reverie

The Reverie adjustable base is a high-tech sleep machine that will not only meet your comfort needs, but also give you a massage, charge your devices, and more.

When is your bed more than a bed? When it's as capable of multitasking as you are. Once you've slept in a Reverie 9T Adjustable Foundation, it's likely that you'll never leave it again. That's because you can adjust the Reverie to just about any position you'd like.

While I wouldn't recommend turning your bedroom into your home office, the Reverie makes it easy to spend just about all day in one place, but in multiple positions. Trust me, I've (almost) done it.

Thanks to its remote-controlled adjustability, you can elevate your head, feet, or both to an optimal position for sleeping, watching tv, reading, or eliminating snoring. The remote control comes with presets for Flat, Anti-Snore, and Zero Gravity, which involves elevating your legs way up in a position that I find ideal for relaxation.

There two more programmable positions that you can set with whatever your unique preferences may be. The frame also features lumbar support, which can be adjusted by degrees to best suit your needs.

When it comes to appearances, the foundation boasts a sleek design, and the gray upholstery goes well with the slighter darker gray wood on the lower half. If you're into minimalist or contemporary decor, this is an aesthetically pleasing bed.

One of my favorite aspects of the Reverie is that it features quiet, 3D Wave massage therapy that comes in four waves and an impressive 10 intensities. Most other beds that offer built-in massage only offer two or three waves, and around five intensities. While it's not quite like having an in-house masseuse, it's pretty darn close.

As for the additional tech elements of the bed, the Reverie boasts a unique charging pad that can charge compatible smartphones wirelessly, all while simultaneously charging the accompanying remote via the built-in USB port. You can also program your bed via a companion smartphone app, and as an added bonus, there's an under the bed LED nightlight for your midnight bathroom breaks.

And should anything go wrong with your bed, it does come with a 20-year limited warranty. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Frame can be adjusted to just about any position, great massage capabilities, charge your devices wirelessly or with USB port

Cons: Expensive, some reports of hard-to-reach customer service

The best simple bed frame
best bed frame casper

The Casper frame and foundation aren't fancy, but they do the job and arrive at your doorstep hassle-free.

If you're just looking for a bed frame to get the job done, look no further than the Casper foundation and frame combination. In my search for a trusty, easy to receive, and most importantly, easy to set up bed frame, I found just about none better than Casper.

While known best for being the original bed-in-a-box brand, Casper offers much more than just mattresses. Its foundation and frame combination is compatible not only with Casper's own mattresses but just about anything else you throw on top of it, too.

Made with solid wood, Casper says that it "rigorously tested" its foundation for durability, and thus far, I can say that this is quite apparent. While other foundations I've slept on have seemed a bit saggy, the Casper foundation is solid. This is due partly to the fact that Casper carefully spaced out the slats. They're all four inches apart, which provides great support and prevents the aforementioned sagging issue. Best of all, the foundation can be assembled and disassembled in just minutes without the use of tools.

While you can use the foundation without the frame, you should probably invest in the affordable metal setup as well. The frame is constructed with 100% recycled steel, and again, provides an additional layer of support beneath your foundation. Like the foundation, it's extremely easy to set up and requires no extra tools. When I received the whole set, I was able to sleep on my newly assembled bed within 15 minutes. The most difficult part was probably dragging the long boxes up the stairs.

Aesthetically, this frame and foundation set are perfectly adequate. Easily dressed up with a nice headboard, the setup won't draw any attention to itself. At the end of the day, if you're looking for a simple bed frame that will come to your doorstep hassle-free, this is the way to go. — Lulu Chang

Pros: Very easy to set up, affordable, sturdy, made with durable materials

Cons: Some customers noted that the frame arrived damaged (though Casper's customer service team will take care of this for you)

The best canopy bed frame
best bed frame dhp

The DHP Rosedale Metal Canopy Bed Frame adds a hint of romance and old-fashioned style to your bedroom.

The DHP Rosedale Metal Canopy Bed Frame, available in three colors, lets you add your own unique style to make your entire bed setup feel personalized and one of a kind. You can drape the canopy with your favorite curtains, upholstery, lights, and much more, change up the design with the seasons, or you could simply use it as-is for a more minimalist look.

This four-poster canopied bed frame with sleek, modern X-shaped square accents in the headboard and footboard is crafted out of sturdy metal and has multiple support bars underneath it to hold your mattress in place.

A box spring is probably a safe add-on to ensure you get the most life out of your mattress, though one user explained that a box spring made the bed squeak when used more "actively," so you may prefer to go without the box spring.

Pros: Sturdy and durable, easy to personalize, you can change up the style quickly and easily

Cons: Assembly can be a drag, you may want to purchase a box spring as well

The best modular bed frame
best bed frame floyd

Thanks to its customizable, modular design, you can take The Floyd Platform Bed to future homes and through mattress upgrades with little fuss.

The bed frame from buzzy direct-to-consumer home brand Floyd looks stylish and modern, and you can choose from four different wood and color combinations, and add a headboard or underbed storage. It's made in the US from FSC-certified wood and powder-coated steel. But we don't only love it for its style.

The frame is lightweight yet supportive and sturdy, plus the optional underbed storage is perfect for keeping bedding and clothing items. If you upgrade your mattress size down the line, all you have to do is add panels and supports, instead of buying a whole new frame.

Editor Caitlin Petreycik is testing the Floyd Platform Bed and loved the straightforward, tool-free assembly process. However, she notes that the boxes and panels are heavy, and it would help to have a second person for assembly. Make sure you assemble the frame in the general area where you'd ultimately like to place it — otherwise, you'll have to grab it where the wooden planks are joined in order to move it.

In case the frame isn't for you, there's a 30-day free return policy, as well as a 10-year warranty. —Connie Chen

Pros: Customizable and modular features, roomy underbed storage, high-quality and responsibly sourced materials

Cons: Expensive, low-to-the-ground design isn't for everyone

The best faux-leather bed frame
best bed frame dhp

No matter what mattress you choose, with this DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed it will feel like you're laying in luxury.

If your heart is set on a bed frame that has that standout, elegant leather look, but you simply can't justify spending thousands of dollars, this DHP Dakota Faux Leather Tufted Upholstered Platform Bed could be the solution. We love that there are so many purchase options available. You can buy it in twin, full, queen, and king sizes and in black, brown, or white faux leather.

The contemporary bed frame comes with a padded faux leather upholstered headboard and sturdy metal side rails, which add stability and durability. It's supported with 24 wooden bed slats to provide more than adequate comfort without the need for a box spring.

The manufacturer says the bed works well with memory foam mattresses and coil mattresses but doesn't explicitly state other mattresses won't do.

The faux leather is easy to clean and is detailed with button tufts and padding that give it a stylish, yet understated design so it can scale up even the plainest of bedrooms.

Pros: Price, design, comes with headboard, easy to clean

Cons: May not be as sturdy as one would like, assembly can be a hassle

best bed frame thuma

Thuma Bed Frame, $695-$995

This direct-to-consumer brand's bed frame is sturdy, simple to build, and beautifully made — though it's one of the more expensive frames we've tested. The style is on the modern and minimalist side, and it has a low profile platform that still has a nine-inch clearance for storage. Its headboard, while comfortable and supportive, is a bit short for our tastes.

How to pick the right bed frame
malm bed frame ikea

How to pick the right bed frame

  • Size matters: First get the sizing right. You want a bed frame that blends into the room naturally, not one that overwhelms the room by taking up too much space. Also, note that bed frame sizes are not completely standardized. They can differ depending on the country they are made in or by the manufacturer, either of which may have their own standards and use their own terminology for sizing.
  • Get a good mattress: Once you have an idea of how much space you have to work with, get the mattress size correct. Your mattress can be as large as your room allows, but the main goal is that it can hold your body comfortably, without any limbs hanging off the sides. You don't want one that makes you feel like Will Ferrell in the movie Elf. If you're buying a mattress for two people, you should both be able to lie down, side by side, and have your arms behind your head with your elbows out, without touching each other. From there, you can match the mattress size to the bed frame size. Check out the best mattresses you can buy here.
  • Check the pricing: Bed frame pricing is all over the place. Pricing is usually dependent upon the material of the frame, with leather-covered and wooden frames being the most expensive and metal frames the least.
  • Figure out what style you want: Because your bed setup is the highlight of the room, the design of your bed frame certainly plays a role in your choice. It's up to your personal preferences, other design elements in the room, and the available space you have to work with.

Bed frame types

There are various types of bed frames available, but one trick to narrow down your options is to decide if you want a platform or box spring bed. With many platform bed frames, you won't need a box spring. For more firmness, opt for a platform bed without a box spring, which will provide a harder and more supportive foundation. Here are the different types of bed frames:

  • Platform bed frames without a box spring are usually lower to the ground, which may make them harder to get in and out of, especially if you experience back pain or other complications. On the plus side, because platform bed frames are lower, they provide a cooler sleep environment. Also, cutting the box spring out of your total bed buying costs will make your bed much cheaper.
  • Box spring bed frames will lift your mattress higher off the ground, making your bed easier to get in and out of. Box springs usually do help extend the life of your mattress by preventing sagging. Box spring bed frames are the go-to pick for the traditionalist, but the box spring itself will not last forever. Over time, box springs lose support and do not provide as many mattress-saving benefits. To get the most out of a box spring, simply turn it frequently, so the heaviest weight is not constantly placed in the same area.
  • Headboards and footboards are sometimes included with the bed frame for added style. These can be made out of metal or wood, and they're sometimes covered in fabric or leather.
  • Specialty bed frames come in a few different forms, including sleigh beds, four-poster beds, canopy beds, daybeds, and so on. These bed frames add more style and drama to your bedroom.

Wood, upholstered, and metal bed frames

If durability is a top priority, then a metal frame is your best bet. With good care, metal bed frames look nearly new for years and aren't damaged as easily as wooden bed frames. However, wooden bed frames are still considered highly durable and are usually a good value for the cost. They're pretty low maintenance and may even be easier to care for than metal frames, which can fall victim to rust. You can also find bed frames that are covered in fabric, genuine leather, or faux leather for added style.

2 more people have been reinfected with the coronavirus, European scientists say, a day after the first confirmed reinfection in Hong Kong

A member of medical staff takes coronavirus test samples of a woman during drive-thru coronavirus testing on a converted ice rink, in Alkmaar, Netherlands April 8, 2020.
  • Reports of people catching the novel coronavirus a second time are starting to trickle in, months into the pandemic.
  • A Belgian woman was reported to have a mild second case, three months after her first illness.
  • And an older person in the Netherlands with a weakened immune system caught the coronavirus twice too, a leading Dutch researcher reported.
  • On Monday, scientists confirmed the first coronavirus reinfection case: A 33-year-old, healthy man from Hong Kong who had traveled to Spain and back.
  • Experts say these findings are not cause for concern: They show our immune system mounts an adequate defense against this virus — a defense that can help fend off the illness' worst effects a second time around.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Just hours after the world's first confirmed coronavirus reinfection case was documented in Hong Kong on Monday, researchers reported a woman in Belgium had caught the virus a second time. So, too, did Dutch virus experts, who announced an older person in the Netherlands as a third confirmed reinfection of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Experts used genetic testing, in which they compare versions of the virus present in the first and second infections, to confirm these reinfections were distinct second cases, and not just lingering effects of the people's first infections.

But just because a few COVID-19 reinfections have started to crop up among more than 23.69 million documented coronavirus cases worldwide doesn't mean that an initial coronavirus infection does nothing to protect people from future illnesses, or that a vaccine won't help stamp out this pandemic.

"I don't want people to be afraid," Maria van Kerkhove, the World Health Organization's technical lead for COVID-19, said on Monday when asked about the Hong Kong reinfection case. "We need to ensure that people understand that when they are infected, even when they have a mild infection, that they do develop an immune response."

The new reinfection cases in Belgium and the Netherlands

FILE PHOTO: A police officer talks to medical workers outside a hospital, during the lockdown imposed by the Belgian government to slow down the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread, in Brussels, Belgium April 17, 2020. REUTERS/Francois Lenoir
A police officer talks to medical workers outside a hospital, during the lockdown imposed by the Belgian government to slow down the coronavirus spread, in Brussels, Belgium April 17, 2020.

The reinfection case in the Netherlands, diagnosed in an elderly person with a weakened immune system, was confirmed to Business Insider on Tuesday by Erasmus MC, where virologist Marion Koopmans works. (Her data on the case has not been made public yet, and Erasmus cited Dutch privacy laws when asked for details.)

"Just because you've built up antibodies doesn't mean you're immune," Koopmans said, in an interview about the reinfection case with Dutch public broadcaster NOS

But even if a person doesn't develop full immunity to a virus, and gets reinfected, the body seems to remember its previous illnesses. In addition to antibodies, T cells and other components of a person's immune system all work together to better fight back an active infection the second time around.

That seems to be what happened in Belgium, where a woman in her 50s who already had the coronavirus in March was reportedly diagnosed a second time in June.

Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst has not yet made public the data behind his claim either, but said the woman developed very few antibodies after her first infection, and surmised that that may be why she was susceptible to reinfection (though her second case was mild).

"We would have preferred the time between two infections to have been longer," Van Ranst told Belgian public broadcaster VRT news. "The antibodies from the first time do not help enough to prevent the second infection."

He said more of these seemingly rare reinfection cases will likely continue to pop up in the coming months, as people's immunity to the coronavirus (from their previous infections) wanes.

"Maybe there will be more who will have it a second time after 6 months, or 9 months," he said.

Researchers reported another reinfection case in Hong Kong Monday

The two European reinfection cases bring the official tally of coronavirus reinfection cases to three, among tens of millions.

Previous reports of 260 reinfections from South Korea in April turned out to be lingering cases of the same infection. One other potential reinfection case was reported in the US in June, and another 3 were flagged in July in France. But those cases have not been considered confirmed reinfections because less time elapsed between the positive tests, and scientists did not do a genetic sequence of the viruses.

Researchers from Hong Kong University announced Monday that "the world's first documentation of a patient who recovered from COVID-19 but got another episode of COVID-19, afterwards," is forthcoming in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

A 33-year-old, seemingly healthy man who had been sick in March was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus a second time after traveling back to Hong Kong from Spain earlier this month.

While he had a fever, cough, and headaches during his first COVID-19 illness, the man had no symptoms during his second infection.

Why reinfection cases are not unexpected, or a reason to panic

Many epidemiologists have anticipated coronavirus reinfections like these could be possible.

"You can get repeatedly infected once your immunity goes down," Florian Krammer, a vaccine scientist and virus expert at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, previously told Business Insider, when asked about coronavirus immunity

A recovered coronavirus (COVID-19) patient donates blood samples for plasma extraction to help critically ill patients at the National Blood Transfusion Center.
A recovered coronavirus patient donates blood samples for plasma extraction to help critically ill patients at the National Blood Transfusion Center on June 22, 2020.

These three cases, then, aren't a reason to panic. Instead, they show how previous infections can provide people with some decent protection from another coronavirus illness.

"That someone would pop up with a reinfection, it doesn't make me nervous," Koopmans told Reuters. "We have to see whether it happens often."

Indeed, Krammer predicted (just as these reinfection cases suggest) that a patient's second tangle with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, will generally be less severe than their first: "It's very likely that if you did get reinfected after some time, it would be an attenuated disease," he said.

The same could be true of coronavirus vaccines, once they're developed: even if they don't protect people from infection at 100%, vaccines could help our immune systems battle this illness better.

  • As the novel coronavirus continues to spread, some countries are putting their citizens on various forms of lockdown, though that's not a technical term used by public-health officials.
  • Most countries, including Spain, Germany, and South Korea, have started relaxing lockdown measures. The results have been mixed.
  • More than 814,008 people have died and over 23,683,592 have been infected by the coronavirus worldwide.

Countries around the world are implementing measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus, from national quarantines to school closures.

Several countries (like Spain, Iran, Italy, Denmark, Israel, and Germany) that previously imposed restrictions are beginning to lift lockdown measures. But results have been mixed.

While "lockdown" isn't a technical term used by public-health officials, it can refer to anything from mandatory geographic quarantines to non-mandatory recommendations to stay at home, closures of certain types of businesses, or bans on events and gatherings, Lindsay Wiley, a health law professor at the Washington College of Law, told Vox.

Here are the countries and territories that have implemented mandatory mass quarantines so far — and how some of them are beginning to open up.
