Trump attacked Biden's economic plan as a huge tax hike for the middle-class. But most Americans wouldn't see their taxes directly increase.

Joe Biden, Donald Trump
  • Trump engaged in a barrage of inaccurate attacks on Democrats during his Thursday speech at the Republican National Convention.
  • He said Biden's tax plan would raise taxes on "almost all American families," which would "totally collapse our rapidly improving economy."
  • But experts across several think-tanks say most of the new taxes would fall squarely upon the highest earners, particularly the top 1% of households.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

President Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday evening in a 70-minute speech that constructed an alternate reality of his administration's management of the coronavirus pandemic. He glossed over the federal government's lapses during the crisis and engaged in a barrage of inaccurate attacks on Democrats.

He portrayed his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, as a serious threat to the nation's economic recovery. The president blasted Biden's plan to revive the coronavirus-striken economy, saying it would increase taxes for the vast majority of Americans.

"Joe Biden may claim he is an 'ally of the light,' but when it comes to his agenda, Biden wants to keep us completely in the dark," the president said, referring to the Democratic presidential nominee's acceptance speech last week. "He has pledged a $4 trillion tax hike on almost all American families, which will totally collapse our rapidly improving economy."

However, Trump's attack on the Biden tax plan is misleading and not entirely grounded in reality. While economists do project Biden's tax plan would raise $4 trillion in new federal revenue over a decade, most of the burden falls squarely upon the highest earners — particularly the top 1% of households and not those in the middle class.

It means most people wouldn't experience a direct tax increase if Biden beats Trump in November. Biden doubled down on his pledge to not raise taxes for people earning below $400,000 a year in an ABC News interview.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget recently analyzed Biden's tax plans through projections released by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, the Penn Wharton Budget Model, the Tax Foundation, and American Enterprise Institute. The latter two think-tanks lean conservative.

Through those four analyses, the CRFB estimated the top one-fifth of earners would experience a tax increase ranging from 2.3% to 5.7%. But most of that increase is "driven by a 13.0 to 17.8 percent increase for the top 1 percent."

For taxpayers in the bottom four income quartiles, their taxes would increase by up to 0.6% in 2021, mostly because of Biden's intention to partially roll back Trump's tax cuts for large corporations, known as the Tax Cut and Jobs Act.

"These increases are not due to direct taxes ... but rather the indirect effects of increasing corporate taxes, which all four estimators assume is partially born by workers," the organization said.

Put another way, most middle-income households could see their taxes indirectly go up by $260, while those in the top 1% see them swell by over $300,000, the Tax Policy Center estimated.

Biden's tax proposals also wouldn't demolish the economy as Trump claimed. CRFB said it would likely "modestly shrink" its size in the long-run based on three of the analyses.

By contrast, Trump's tax plan has been light on details. Ahead of the Republican National Convention this week, the Trump campaign released a second-term agenda with a 48-word section on "Jobs." It included specifics-free pledges to create 10 million jobs over 10 months and reduce taxes to boost take-home pay, among others.

"Without further details or clarification, it is difficult to fully analyze President Trump's second term tax policy agenda," the Tax Foundation's Erica York said in a blog post analyzing the agenda. "Broad themes of the president's agenda include providing tax relief to individuals and tax credits to businesses that engage in desired activities, while the status of expiring [Tax Cut and Jobs Act] provisions and tariffs seems uncertain."

Fitbit has one big advantage that Apple can't match when it comes to sleep tracking

  • The Apple Watch will finally get native sleep tracking through a software update later this year.
  • The Apple Watch will be able to measure the time you've spent asleep and awake and help you prepare for bed.
  • But Fitbit offers more comprehensive metrics and, more important, longer battery life — making it much easier to track your sleep without scrambling for a charger.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When Apple's watchOS 7 update launches rolls out later this year, the Apple Watch will finally be able to monitor your sleep — a capability that has only been possible by installing a third-party app until this point.

The addition addresses one of the Apple Watch's main shortcomings compared to other fitness trackers like those made by Fitbit.

Given Apple's big push into health over the past several years, it's no surprise that the company is focusing on new areas like sleep. But if you've used a Fitbit device in the past, don't expect the Apple Watch's sleep tracking experience to be a direct comparison.

The Apple Watch is more limited in terms of the metrics it tracks during your slumber. But most importantly, the Apple Watch's battery life isn't as long as that of Fitbit's smartwatches and wristbands, which can make it challenging to get through the day without scrambling for a charge after wearing it overnight.

Apple's sleep features, rather, are more focused on the entire experience of sleep, meaning it helps you prepare for bed rather than just tracking what happens once you're asleep.

Apple hasn't said when its watchOS 7 software will officially launch, but the public beta is available today. If you do plan on trying the public beta, keep in mind that it's not the final version of the software so you may experience bugs. And you also won't be able to roll your watch's software back to the previous version.

Apple typically releases the final version of its new watch software in the fall.

Here's a closer look at what it's been like to track my sleep using the Apple Watch.

First, here's how the Apple Watch helps you get ready for bed.
Apple Watch Sleep Slide 1
A screenshot from the iPhone's Health app

With iOS 14 and watchOS 7, Apple wants to help you fight the urge to pick up your phone when it's almost time for bed. You can set a bedtime in the iPhone's Health app, which can kick your phone into Sleep Mode automatically when the time comes.

Sleep Mode turns on Do Not Disturb Mode to minimize distractions before bed. It also locks the Apple Watch's screen so that it doesn't turn on when you move your wrist during sleep.

You can choose to have Sleep Mode turn on manually or at your set bedtime.

Aside from your predetermined bedtime, Apple also offers an option called Wind Down, which lets you set a routine to help you get ready for bed.
Apple Watch Sleep Slide 2
A screenshot from the iPhone's Health app

This can include launching a playlist or podcast to listen to before bed, or an app for journaling or meditation, as well as triggering a Home scene to turn down your smart lights. In addition to launching a routine, Wind Down also turns on sleep mode.

During my time using watchOS 7 and iOS 14 so far, I set Wind Down to begin 45 minutes before it was time to head to bed. I appreciated the notification-free lock screen and "Sleep Well" greeting on my iPhone.

But kicking my phone and watch into Sleep Mode didn't necessarily stop me from reaching for my phone to check my email one last time before bed or scroll through Instagram.  I often found myself twisting the Digital Crown to unlock my watch and get one last look at how much progress I made toward my fitness goals before calling it a day.

When it comes to sleep tracking, the Apple Watch mostly measures the amount of time you spent asleep.
Apple Watch Sleep Slide 3
A screenshot from the iPhone's Health app

The Apple Watch can monitor the amount of time you spent in bed and the amount of time you spent asleep. That can enable you to see how much rest you actually got versus the amount of time you spent in bed.

It also tells you what time you fell asleep and what time you woke up, and you can view these metrics for each night you've tracked as well as trends over the past week and month.

If you want to see how your average sleep time compares to your sleep goal, just tap the Sleep Goal button when looking at your data.

You can also view a summary of your heart rate data throughout the night, although I had trouble locating this information since it's not in the Health app's Sleep section. Instead, you have to navigate to the Heart section, tap into a specific heart rate reading, select "Show More Heart Rate Data," and check the "Sleep" metric.

Fitbit, however, provides a much deeper dive into the quality of your sleep.
Apple Watch Sleep Slide 4
A screenshot from Fitbit's app

Fitbit provides a wealth of sleep data, including how much time you spent in each specific stage of sleep — REM, light, and deep sleep — in addition to time spent awake. You can also view benchmarks that compare your metrics against the typical results for people of your age and gender.

Fitbit issues a score that assesses the quality of your sleep, but you need to sign up for a Fitbit Premium membership to get deeper insights. Fitbit determines your sleep score by looking at the duration of your sleep, how much time you spend in deep and REM sleep, and how relaxed you were during sleep. That last metric is measured by examining your heart rate during sleep and how much you were tossing and turning.

Like the Apple Watch, Fitbit also allows you to set a sleep schedule and sleep goals. It can also send you reminders for when it's time to go to bed.

Fitbit's biggest advantage over Apple when it comes to sleep tracking is its long battery life.
Apple Watch and Fitbit Versa 2
The Apple Watch Series 5 (left) and Fitbit Versa 2 (right)

In my past experience, the Fitbit Versa 2 lasts around four or five days on a single charge with the always-on-display feature turned off. With that capability switched on, I've been able to get about two days of battery life. That also lines up with the experience other reviewers have had with the Fitbit Versa 2 when it comes to battery life.

In both cases, that's much longer than the battery life on the Apple Watch Series 5, which I've found to last for about a day and a half. Until this point, it didn't really matter that the Apple Watch couldn't offer multi-day battery life. Like many Apple Watch owners, I've gotten into the routine of charging my watch overnight alongside my iPhone.

But using the Apple Watch as a sleep tracker has forced me to re-think this and develop new habits. It's not impossible or impractical to get through the day without charging your watch overnight. You can, for example, charge the watch briefly throughout the workday when you probably don't have much use for it anyhow. That's the approach I've decided to take recently, considering I'm not using it for activity tracking or social notifications when I'm at my desk.

The bigger issue, though, isn't the convenience — it's changing my routine to actually remember to take my watch off and charge it. On more than one occasion, I've gotten into my gym gear and was ready to hit the treadmill to suddenly receive a notification that my watch had only 10% battery left. This rarely happens when using a Fitbit device.

Overall, the Apple Watch is helpful for getting some insight into how much sleep you're getting, but it has major drawbacks that for some could be deal breakers.
time smart tech apple watch series 5 cox 15
The Apple Watch Series 5

If you make a greater effort that I have to embrace tools like sleep mode and Wind Down, the Apple Watch can also help you limit your screen time before bed.

But its current battery life holds it back from being as useful as it can be as an all-purpose wellness tracker. For me, monitoring my sleep with the Apple Watch comes with the risk of not being able to track all of my physical activity during the day if I forget to charge it.

That may not be the case for everyone, and many may find it much easier to adjust to a new charging routine than I have. But if you're planning to start using your Apple Watch as a sleep tracker anytime soon — either through any of the third-party apps currently available or Apple's native feature in the fall — it's something to definitely keep in mind.

The hearing will examine FEMAs response effort during the Coronavirus Pandemic.
  • First-term Rep. Harley Rouda will face Republican Michelle Steel in California's 48th congressional district.
  • The district is located in Orange County, the third-most populous county in California, and has been trending Democratic in recent election cycles.
  • Rouda defeated 15-term Republican incumbent Dana Rohrabacher in 2018.

First-term Rep. Harley Rouda squares off against Republican Michelle Steel to represent California's 48th congressional district.

The candidates

Rouda is a lawyer and formerly the general counsel for HER Realtors, his late father's company. In his 2018 campaign for office, Rouda received $4 million from businessman and former presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, according to the Orange County Register. Rouda went on to endorse Bloomberg's presidential campaign in February 2020. In 2018, Rouda ran against 15-term incumbent Dana Rohrabacher, beating him by 5.4 percent.

Steel, Rouda's challenger, is a South Korean immigrant and the current Chairwoman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

She was previously on the board of the California State Board of Equalization. During the tenure of President George W. Bush, Steel was selected as a member of the  President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Her campaign platform revolves around lowering taxes in California, securing borders, and combatting the state's rising homelessness issues.

The district

California's 48th congressional district is located south of Los Angeles in Orange County. The district includes the cities of Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Seal Beach, and Laguna Niguel and portions of Westminster, Santa Ana, Aliso Viejo, Garden Grove, and Midway City. The district is the third most populous county in California.

The 48th District is in a group of Orange County congressional districts that have rapidly trending Democratic in recent election cycles. Orange County, once the homeland of staunch Reagan Republicans, has seen its voters turn away from the GOP under President Donald Trump.

The 48th district went from voting for 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney by nearly 12 points in 2012, according to the Daily Kos, to backing 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by 1.7 points.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the two candidates have raised similar amounts. Rouda, the incumbent, has raised $3.67 million while Steel has raised $3.36 million. With $2.8 million in cash on hand, Rouda leads his challenger by $800,000 as the November election approaches.

What experts say

The race between Rouda and Steel is rated as "leans Democrat" by Inside Elections, The Cook Political Report, and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics

Alan Cohn accepts a Peabody Award in 2006 for his years-long investigative project on defective parts being installed on Black Hawk helicopters. Cohn is running to represent Florida's 15th Congressional District.
  • Democrat Alan Cohn will face Republican Scott Franklin in Florida's 15th Congressional District.
  • The district is currently represented by first-term Rep. Ross Spano. Spano lost his bid for re-election after being defeated by Franklin in the state's August Republican primary election.
  • Both candidates have less than $150,000 in cash on hand remaining.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Democrat Alan Cohn is set to face off against Republican Scott Franklin in Florida's 15th Congressional District. The district is currently represented by first-term Rep. Ross Spano who was defeated by Franklin in the August Republican primary.

Shortly after being elected to Congress in 2018, Spano came under suspicion of violating campaign-finance law over a personal loan he made to his campaign. He is believed to have borrowed $180,000 from two of his friends before making the personal loan for a similar amount, and is currently the subject of investigations from the US House, the Florida Bar, and the US Department of Justice.

The candidates

Cohn is a longtime Floridian television journalist. In 2006, he was awarded a Peabody Award for his multi-year investigation into a Florida company installing defective pieces onto Black Hawk helicopters. He previously ran in Florida's 15th Congressional District in 2014 where he lost to incumbent Rep. Dennis Ross by 20.6 percent. Cohn's campaign platform prioritizes lowering prescription drug prices, reforming the Affordable Care Act, and rolling back Trump's 2018 tax bill.

Franklin is a 26-year US Navy veteran, insurance businessman, and Lakeland City commissioner, a position he was first elected to in 2018. His campaign revolves around standing against Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, lowering taxes, and standing against legal abortion.

The district

Florida's 15th Congressional District is located in the center of the state and occupies a swath of land between Tampa and Orlando. The district is home to the northern regions of Hillsborough and Polk counties, the southern edge of Lake County, and the cities of Plant City, Bartow, Lakeland, and Brandon.

The district, which Trump carried by over 10 points in 2016, has not been represented by a Democrat since Rep. Jim Bacchus' retirement in 1995.

The money race

Franklin entered the race relatively recently, in April, and raised over $587,000, including from a $350,000 personal loan, according to Federal Election Commission filings. With $580,000 raised, Cohn and Franklin have accumulated nearly equal amounts for their campaigns. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Cohn has about $130,000 in cash on hand remaining– about $26,000 more than Franklin with $104,000.

What experts say

The race between Cohn and Franklin is rated as "leans Republican" by Inside Elections, The Cook Political Report, and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

  • First-term Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will face Republican Carlos Gimenez in Florida's 26th Congressional District.
  • The district is the state's southernmost congressional district and is home to the Florida Keys, part of Miami-Dade County, all of the state's national parks, and Florida Atlantic University.
  • Mucarsel-Powell currently has over three times more cash on hand and money raised than Gimenez.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

First-term Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell looks to defend her seat against Republican Carlos Gimenez in Florida's 26th Congressional District.

The candidates

Mucarsel-Powell unseated former GOP Congressman Carlos Curbelo in 2018. Before her political career began, Mucarsel-Powell served as the director of advancement at Florida International University where she would later rise to become the associate dean of the college's school of medicine.

When she was 24, she lost her father to gun violence which she said led to her forming her current support of "common-sense" gun reform. In addition to gun safety, she is campaigning on a platform which includes affordable healthcare, raising the minimum wage, and reforming the current immigration system. Mucarsel-Powell currently sits on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure as well as the House Committee on Judiciary.

Gimenez, Mucarsel-Powell's Republican challenger, is the current mayor of Miami-Dade County– a position he has held since 2011. An immigrant from Cuba, he moved to Florida as a child and became a firefighter in 1974, ultimately rising to the rank of fire chief in 1991. He began his foray into politics in 2000 when he left the fire team and served as the city manager of Miami and then the Miami-Dade County Commissioner.

The district

Florida's 26th Congressional District is located in Florida's southernmost region. It includes all of Monroe County as well as the southwestern region of Miami-Dade County. The district is home to all of the Florida Keys, Florida International University, and all three of the state's national parks. The southern district was put into effect in 2013, following the new 2010 U.S. Census data.

The 26th District has been trending into reliably Democratic territory over the past few election cycles. Before Curbelo was unseated in 2018, he was one of few Republican members of congress to represent a district won by both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Obama carried the district by 11.5 percentage points in 2012 and Clinton won the district by a larger margin of 16 points in 2016, according to the Daily Kos.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Mucarsel-Powell has raised $3.8 million – over three times as much as Gimenez with $1.1 million. Gimenez has $882,000 in cash on hand remaining, also over three times less than Mucarsel-Powell's $2.8 million on hand.

What experts say

The race between Mucarsel-Powell and Gimenez is rated as a "toss-up" by The Cook Political Report, "tilts Democratic" by Inside Elections, and "leans Democratic" by Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

The most unusual, extravagant ways tech executives like Larry Ellison and Elon Musk have spent their money

If you're among the richest people in the world, chances are you've found some unusual ways to spend your money.

That's what tech executives like Larry Ellison, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk have done, anyway — they've spent money on everything from a massive chunk of the state of Hawaii to the submarine car from the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me."

Some tech billionaires are famously frugal, while others spend money on more conventional expenditures like mansions or fabulous vacations. And while the tech billionaires featured below own their fair share of homes and yachts — plus found time for more noble pursuits like donating to charity or signing the Giving Pledge — they've also used their billions to pursue passion projects.

Here are some of the more unusual and extravagant ways tech executives have spent their money.

Many CEOs make expensive home and land purchases, but perhaps none more so than Oracle founder Larry Ellison. In 2012, the billionaire purchased 98% of the Hawaiian island Lanai.
Larry Ellison Lanai

Ellison reportedly paid $300 million for the island in 2012. It contains 90,000 acres of land and several resorts, and is home to more than 3,200 residents. Ellison plans to use to land to test environmentally friendly practices like solar power and electric vehicles.

Unsurprisingly, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has an interest in unusual vehicles. In 2013, for example, he bought the Lotus Esprit submarine car that's used in the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me." Musk paid $920,000 at auction.
Elon Musk Lotus

"It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in 'The Spy Who Loved Me' drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater," Musk said in a statement to Jalopnik at the time. "I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform. What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real."

Bezos also has a passion for space, as evidenced by his Blue Origin rocket company. In 2013, the exec funded an expedition to retrieve the remains of multiple Apollo engines from the bottom of the ocean.

Bezos led a team that sent unmanned robots 14,000 feet down to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off of Cape Canaveral, Florida, to gather the engine parts from the Apollo 12 moon mission.

"To bring those pieces up on deck and actually touch them, that brought back for me all those feelings I had when I was 5 years old and watched those missions go to the moon," Bezos said in a video about the expedition, according to the Seattle Times. "If this results in one young explorer, one young adventurer, one young inventor, doing something amazing that helps the world, I'm totally fulfilled."

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has reportedly invested between $100 million and $150 million of his own money into building a 600-foot flying airship.

An airship, although not the one Sergey Brin may be building.

Brin is said to be building the airship, which would be the world's largest aircraft, out of a NASA research center near Mountain View, California.

He reportedly envisions using it to make deliveries for humanitarian missions or as an "air yacht" for friends and family.

Brin's fellow Google cofounder Larry Page is also interested in flying vehicles, though of a slightly different variety: Page funds three different flying-car startups.

Page has invested in a two-seater flying taxi called Cora and a flying boat called Flyer, which are both made by electric flight transportation company Kitty Hawk. He's also involved in Opener, a startup that makes a flying vehicle called BlackFly.

It's not clear how much money Page has invested in these projects.

And while many high-powered executives have private planes, Page and Brin one-upped the typical Gulfstream jet. In 2005, they bought a former passenger plane, a Boeing 767-200.

But in true Google fashion, Page and Brin tricked out the inside, adding a dining area, two staterooms with adjacent bathrooms, and multiple seating areas. The jet can hold up to 50 passengers and includes several first-class seats.

Meanwhile, Oracle's Larry Ellison owns a decommissioned Soviet jet fighter, the Mikoyan MiG-29.

Just hours before leaving for the six-week summer recess, Congress is set to pass a budget and raise the debt limit after a deal was struck between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin earlier this week.
  • First-term Rep. Lauren Underwood will face Republican Jim Oberweis in Illinois' 14th congressional district.

  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

First-term Rep. Lauren Underwood looks to defend her seat against Republican Jim Oberweis in Illinois' 14th congressional district.

The candidates

Underwood, a registered nurse, was a policy coordinator and senior advisor for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She defeated four-term incumbent Randy Hultgren in 2018 to become the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress. Underwood was endorsed by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden prior to the 2018 election.

Oberweis, chairman of Oberweis Dairy, currently represents the 25th district in the state's House of Representatives. He previously attempted to run against President Barack Obama for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2004, but lost in the Republican primary.

The district

Illinois' 14th congressional district is located in the northeastern region of the state, containing some of the Chicago suburbs and exurbs. The district is home to the north and western areas of Chicago and parts of Will, Kendall, Dupage, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties.

The district is one of 30 congressional districts in the United States which voted for President  Donald Trump in 2016 but is currently represented by a Democrat. Trump carried the 14th district by four percentage points in 2016, according to the Daily Kos.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Underwood has raised $4.8 million compared to Oberweis' $1.4 million. Underwood has $3.1 million in cash on hand – over eight times as much as her opponent with $374,000.

What experts say

The race between Underwood and Oberweis is rated as "safe Democratic" by Inside Elections, "likely Democratic" by The Cook Political Report, and "leans Democratic" according to Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

The US tech sector is now worth more than the entire European stock market, Bank of America says

$

Wall Street
  • US tech stocks have overtaken the entire European stock market in market value as investors crowd into mega-caps to ride out the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The tech sector is now worth $9.1 trillion, Bank of America said Thursday, while European stocks — including those in the UK and Switzerland — are worth a collective $8.9 trillion.
  • The five largest US tech stocks — Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook — are worth a collective $7.5 trillion and make up nearly 24% of the S&P 500.
  • Amazon has jumped the most in 2020 so far, while Alphabet's Class A shares have gained the least.
  • Visit the Business Insider homepage for more stories.

US tech stocks surpassed the entire European stock market in market value after surging through the summer on outsize investor interest, Bank of America said in a note to clients.

The sector has notched several extraordinary superlatives through the coronavirus pandemic. Tech names fueled the US market's rapid leap out of bearish territory and now host historically high investor crowding. Most recently, the group drove the S&P 500 to a record high, while the US remains deep in an economic slump and economists fear a double-dip recession.

Tech stocks' market cap totaled $9.1 trillion as of Thursday, Bank of America said. That, for the first time, dwarfed the total value of all European stocks — including those listed in the UK and Switzerland — which stood at $8.9 trillion.

Read more: MORGAN STANLEY: Buy these 12 underappreciated stocks that offer strong profit growth and are due for a surge

To emphasize the speed at which tech stocks have grown, the bank noted that Europe's market cap in 2007 was roughly four times the size of the sector.

Much of that value is concentrated in the top five tech giants: Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Facebook. Together the companies make up nearly 24% of the S&P 500 and are worth roughly $7.5 trillion. Apple alone is valued at over $2 trillion.

Investors largely shifted capital into tech giants at the start of the pandemic, betting that the mega-caps' cash piles and insulation from widespread lockdowns would outperform the market. Some strategists have deemed the names overcrowded, and others say they fear that antitrust measures could erode the companies' success. But that hasn't stopped the sector from continuing its run-up through the summer.

Of the five giants, Amazon has surged the most through the year. The stock is up roughly 85% in 2020, thriving on a surge of online retail activity as Americans stayed at home.

Alphabet's Class A shares are up the least year-to-date compared with its mega-cap peers. Still, the shares have gained roughly 22% in 2020 and more than 7% over just the past month.

Everything you need to know about Indiana's 5th Congressional District Race between Christina Hale and Victoria Spartz

Christina Hale
Indianapolis state Rep. Christina Hale speaks during a news conference, Wednesday, May 25, 2016, in Indianapolis.
  • Democrat Christina Hale will face Republican Victoria Spartz in Indiana's 5th congressional district.
  • The seat is currently held by Republican Rep. Susan Brooks, who announced she would not be running for a fifth term in mid-2019.
  • The district includes Indianapolis' northern and eastern suburbs as well as the cities of Carmel, Anderson, Marion, Noblesville, and Fishers.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Republican Victoria Spartz and Democrat Christina Hale will vie in November to represent Indiana's 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district is currently represented by Republican Rep. Susan Brooks, who announced her plans to retire instead of running for a fifth term in June 2019.

The candidates

Hale is a former state representative for Indiana's 87th district, a title she held for four years. In 2016, she ran for lieutenant governor but lost in the general election.

To win the Democratic nomination, Hale beat out several opponents including Xerox executive Dee Thorton and scientist Jennifer Christie. Her campaign platform centers on lowering healthcare costs, addressing climate change, and strengthening the economy.

Spartz, a current state senator for Indiana's fifth district, is a founding member of the Hamilton County Tea Party and was the Hamilton County Republican Woman of the Year. She won a contested Republican primary of 15 candidates, where she faced xenophobic attack ads from fellow GOP candidate Beth Henderson regarding Spartz's Ukrainian ties.

On Aug.17, 2020, Spartz was endorsed by President Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., on Twitter.

The district

Indiana's 5th congressional district is located in the slightly north of the state's center, Indianapolis. The district includes parts of northern Indianapolis, the city's eastern and northern suburbs, as well as the cities of Carmel, Anderson, Marion, Noblesville, Fishers and sections of Kokomo.

The district has traditionally leaned Republican, but fits the profile of many of the suburban congressional districts with relatively high household median incomes and levels of college education that Democrats have won back in the Trump era.

While Trump carried the district by nearly 12 points in 2016, former Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly narrowly carried the district by a margin of 0.5 percentage points in his 2018 election bid despite losing statewide.

Now, a spate of recent internal polls point to a competitive race in the district. An internal poll conducted for the conservative Club For Growth PAC by Republican firm WPA Intelligence showed Spartz leading Hale by seven points, 47% to 40%.

Since then, a Democratic internal poll conducted for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee showed Hale leading by six points, 50% to 44%, and Democratic nominee Joe Biden leading Trump by thirteen points, 55% to 42%. Another poll conducted by the Global Strategy Group for the Democratic House Majority PAC showed Hale leading Spartz by seven points, 47% to 40%, and Biden leading Trump by eight points, 50% to 42%.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Hale and Spartz are neck in neck with received campaign contributions. Hale has received $1.47 million in donations compared to Spartz' $1.29 million. Hale, however, has $726,000 in cash on hand – over four times than that of Spartz with $170,000.

What experts say

The race between Hale and Spartz is rated as a "toss-up" by The Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics and "leans Republican" by Inside Elections.

The best clothes steamers

  • Ironing can be a real hassle, but you can get the wrinkles out of your clothes much easier with a great steamer.
  • All of our research points to the PurSteam Elite Garment Steamer as the best clothes steamer to keep your clothing wrinkle-free.
  • Read more: The best clothing irons

Crisp, unwrinkled clothes simply improve your look, but, unfortunately, getting your outfit perfectly pressed takes time and effort.

The first options that come to mind may be to A) send your clothes out and have a laundromat or dry cleaner make them wrinkle-free, which can be a burden on your wallet, or B) break out the iron and ironing board and get to work. Luckily there's a faster, easier way, and that is steaming.

Steaming clothes is less complicated than ironing and achieves equally wrinkle-free results. It's the go-to choice in industries like fashion and broadcast where items of clothing may need to be packed up and moved often.

There are various types of garment steamers, but they all generally function the same way. Water is placed in a base or reservoir where it's heated to produce steam, and that steam is then released through a wide nozzle that you hover over the item you're looking to de-wrinkle. Usually, pressure or direct contact with the fabric is not required, as the high heat of the steam is all it takes to remove the wrinkles.

We evaluated each of the following models by taking into account their heat-up time, wrinkle removal efficacy, and durability. Keep reading to find out which of our top picks works best for your needs.

Here are the best clothes steamers:

Updated on 8/28/2020 to include accurate and up-to-date prices, links, and references. We stand by the top five picks highlighted in this post's June 2020 update, but will be testing new products and reassessing accordingly.

The best overall
PurSteam_PS 910_Heavy_Duty_Powerful_Fabric_Steamer_Amazon2

The PurSteam Elite Garment Steamer produces perfect steam for 60 minutes to remove wrinkles from all your clothes.

The PurSteam Elite Garment Steamer removes wrinkles quickly and easily.

Plus, it comes with a money-back guarantee and five-year warranty, so you know it's made to last. While it's not a professional unit, it can handle a family's clothing load with its 61-ounce tank that heats up in just under a minute and provides 60 minutes of stable steam.

The design is part of what makes this steamer so appealing. It has a handy, adjustable hanger that is expandable from 15 to 19 inches. That means no more holding up your clothes — a surefire way to accidentally blast yourself with hot steam — or searching for a hook. It also has clips to help hold other small items in place, such as small children's clothing, pillowcases, and more. The hanger is collapsible and the top hanger part can be replaced with a brush hook, which makes for easy storage.

It comes with a convenient handheld steam board to de-wrinkle collars, pockets, and sleeves. The board also doubles as a crease attachment to provide a more polished, dry-cleaned look.

The PurSteam can handle delicate to heavy materials and provides steam up to 248 degrees Fahrenheit to penetrate fabrics deeply and relax fibers. The high temperature means it works faster than ironing and freshens clothes, killing up to 99.9% of germs. Finally, the cost is reasonable, especially compared to other standing steamers.

Pros: Reasonable price, quality customer service/guarantee, handy built-in hanger, steams for 60 consecutive minutes, convenient add-ons and accessories, sanitizing features

Cons: May not provide a consistent steam flow, which might be caused by calcium or mineral buildup due to using tap water instead of distilled water in the unit

The best on a budget
URPOWER Steamer

More powerful than a travel steamer but still mobile enough to carry, the URPOWER Garment Steamer eliminates wrinkles faster than your average iron.

The URPOWER Garment Steamer makes steaming anywhere a quick and easy process. The 1.2-pound device heats up in only two minutes, and with its 130-milliliter tank, it provides constant steam for 7 to 10 minutes.

This upgraded model has a new nozzle design that distributes steam more powerfully and consistently than the previous version, making it easier to remove stubborn wrinkles.

Even if you're new to steaming, you won't have much trouble learning how to use this steamer. It conveniently features an automatic shut-off function if the unit gets too hot or the water level is too low. This feature protects your clothing as well as the longevity of the unit, which already comes with a two-year warranty.

Because it measures 3.7-by-8.8-by-6.2 inches, it's smaller than an iPad, so you can carry it around without much hassle. It comes with a handy travel pouch, too.

Pros: Price, built-in safety features, easy to use, portable

Cons: May spit water occasionally, questionable longevity

The best handheld
rowenta clothes steamer

The Rowenta X-Cel Handheld Steamer emits powerful steam to make wrinkles disappear, plus, it's not too big.

Rowenta's X-Cel Handheld Steamer is a small device that's just the right size for anyone who needs to quickly steam some wrinkles out of tomorrow's suit, dress shirt, and tie with little fuss.

The steamer emits 1500 Watts worth of steam for 10 minutes straight and heats up in about 40 to 45 seconds. The stainless steel head has several holes for even steam distribution, and it comes with a fabric brush, lint pad, and steam bonnet attachments so you can steam any fabric without destroying it.

Because it's not overly large, Rowenta's steamer is easy to hold and fairly lightweight. I use it to steam my clothes on a regular basis and find it very easy to use. The water tank may be small, but I've never had trouble refilling it and rarely use it for 10 minutes straight, so I've never exhausted the water supply mid-steam.

If you don't steam too many clothes or fabrics all at once and you want a small steamer that you can pack away at a moment's notice, this is it. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Strong steam, small size, easy to hold, not too heavy

Cons: Pricey, small tank

The best for travel
Conair Travel Smart Steamer

With a compact, foldable design, the Conair Travel Smart Garment Steamer is a versatile tool that does the job on the go.

If you've ever tried to use a hotel's iron and been discouraged by the rust, calcium buildup, and other inevitable gunk, you'll understand the importance of a good travel steamer.

While handheld steamers can often be used as travel steamers as well, the Conair Travel Smart Garment Steamer is designed specifically with travel in mind. It's portable and lightweight, weighing just over a pound. And at 4.5 by 4.5 by 9.5 inches, it's one of the smallest we could find on the market.

If you're having trouble visualizing how big that actually is, know that it's a bit bigger than your average thermos, so you won't have trouble packing it in your suitcase or backpack. The handle folds out for use, keeping it nice and compact when you need to store it away.

The reservoir holds enough water for about 10 minutes of continuous steam, so if you're planning on doing an entire trip's worth of clothes in one sitting, you may find yourself refilling the steamer a time or two. But it's great for quick touch-ups to ensure your shirt sleeves look crisp before your meeting.

Another great travel-specific feature of the Conair Travel Steamer is its dual-voltage power, making it safe to take on international trips. You won't need a power converter — just a plug head adaptor — and you won't have to worry about European outlets frying the device.

If something does malfunction, however, Conair offers a limited one-year warranty, so even though this steamer is reasonably affordable, you'll have a bit of extra peace of mind that you're not throwing your money away if something goes wrong.

Pros: Travel-friendly, sanitizing features, works on a variety of materials, dual-voltage, lightweight

Cons: Steam may not be strong enough to get out tough wrinkles, small reservoir

The best for heavy-duty use
J 2000_Jiffy_Garment_Steamer_Jiffy_site

The J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer is robust and durable, providing powerful wrinkle-killing steam for a full 90 minutes.

If you plan on steaming more than an item or two at once, you'll want a more heavy-duty steamer, which is where this J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer comes into play.

The standing steamer features a plastic removable 3/4 gallon water reservoir with a no-drip check valve system that fits securely into the base of the steamer and provides 1.5 hours of steaming per fill.

The steamer is designed with durability and lengthy steam sessions in mind, so it's equally great at home or for light commercial use. It has a high-impact polymer outer housing that provides an extra layer of protection along with wheels that swivel for mobility.

The steamer has a quick two-minute heat up time, which is rather swift considering the amount of water it holds. It has a 5.5-foot hose with a 6-inch steam head, so it can cover a good amount of fabric at once. It comes complete with color-coded high-temperature wiring and a fusible link with an automatic shut-off feature for safety. This steamer can be used on clothing, bedding, table linens, and can even remove wallpaper.

Pros: Steams for 90 consecutive minutes, tough on wrinkles, long-lasting

Cons: Price, design, possible water spit issues

How to choose a clothes steamer
PAX Steamer

How to pick a clothes steamer

Standing garment steamers are the most traditional type of steamer and keep water in some type of base on the floor, while a long tube with a nozzle at the end shoots out steam.

Your typical handheld garment steamer looks like an oversized tea brewer with a wide end rather than a spout, and comes with a cord. The water basin is generally smaller but attached to the nozzle portion of the device, and there are no long tubes so it's easier to maneuver.

Travel garment steamers come in a variety of shapes and designs, but most function the same way as a handheld garment steamer, just with a more compact body.

When shopping for a garment steamer, you should consider a few factors:

  • Performance: The best steamers heat up quickly, although a larger water reservoir can take longer to get up to temperature. Of course, the bigger the reservoir, the more steam time you'll receive in-between refills. Beyond water capacity, the best steamers will not spit water at you or your clothes, but rather, produce uniform steam.
  • Ease of Use: If you're just steaming clothes that can easily fit on a hanger, you may not need a long tube or power cord for your steamer. Larger items like drapes are easier to steam when you have an extendable tube or attachment.
  • Easy to clean: Removable tanks are preferred as they are easier to fill and clean. If your steamer's base isn't removable, make sure the product comes with clear cleaning instructions.
  • Accessories: Some steamers have unique features or come with add-ons that make steaming easier, such as an automatic shut-off function, wheels, built-in hangers, steam boards, and more.
  • Price: Garment steamers vary in price from around $30 to upwards of $200 and are usually more expensive than irons. The price depends on extra features, brand, and more often than not, the amount of water the steamer can hold and the steam time it can provide. By this logic, travel steamers will be the lowest priced option, followed by handheld, and then standing garment steamers.

Some NBA arenas will become 2020 voting locations as part of the players' deal to resume the playoffs

Georgia Election Hawks Arena
An Atlanta Hawks security guard opens a door before a media tour of the State Farm Arena, home of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks basketball team, Friday, July 17, 2020, in Atlanta. The 16,888-seat facility was used as a poll location for the state's August 11 runoffs.
  • Some NBA arenas will be converted into in-person voting sites this November as part of a deal the NBA reached with the league's player's association to resume this season's playoffs.
  • NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the NBPA executive director announced the players have agreed to continue the playoffs in exchange for commitments from the league to social justice and civic engagement.
  • "In every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governors will continue to work with local election officials to convert the facility into a voting location," the statement read.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Some NBA arenas will be used as in-person voting sites this November as part of a deal the NBA reached with the league's player's association to resume this season's playoffs as many teams demanded a stop to play after the police shooting of an unarmed Black man.

In a joint statement Friday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts announced they had reached a deal to continue this season's playoffs on Saturday, which include commitments from the league to promoting civic engagement, voting, and addressing systemic racism.

"In every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governors will continue to work with local election officials to convert the facility into a voting location for the 2020 general election to allow for a safe in-person voting option for communities vulnerable to COVID-19," the statement listed as one of three commitments from the league, also opening up the possibility for stadiums to be used as voter registration sites or facilities where ballots can be counted.

The statement also said the league and players "have agreed immediately to establish a social justice coalition" and will air advertisements during games encouraging viewers to vote.

In an unprecedented move earlier this week, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Orlando Magic announced they would not play in a scheduled match in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man who was shot seven times in the back by Kenosha, Wisconsin police officers.

The teams demanded the Wisconsin state legislature take action on police reform and racism, and even called Wisconsin's Attorney General Josh Kaul from their locker room.

Their strike set off a series of similar moves across the sports world, with fellow NBA teams, WNBA, MLA, and MLS teams also going on strike and demanding concrete action on racial justice before agreeing to play again.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many localities across the United States have struggled to hold in-person voting with sufficient room for social distancing or have been unable to use certain spaces, like senior centers, as polling locations.

Some counties have turned to hosting in-person voting at large vote centers including sports stadiums are other convention centers.

In Kentucky, officials in Jefferson County, which includes Louisville, decided to hold all Election Day in-person voting for the June 23 primary entirely at the Kentucky Exposition Center, a 1.2 million-square-foot convention center that allowed for there to be room for hundreds of voting booths and social distancing.

Already, the Atlanta Hawks offered up its arena to be used as an in-person voting location for Georgia's August 11 primary runoff elections, and before Friday's announcement, the Houston Rockets announced and election officials in Harris County announced that the Toyota Center will be used as an in-person voting site with free parking for Texas' early voting period and on November 3rd.

Many basketball players and prominent athletes have used their platforms to advocate not just for police reform but expanded voting rights and an end to voter suppression in the wake of several high-profile incidents of African-Americans dying in encounters with police, deaths that sparked protests across the nation over the summer.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the world's most pre-eminent athletes, co-founded an organization called More Than a Vote, which is taking on a number of initiatives to expand voter access in Black communities, including registering and turning out Black voters, combatting suppression, and, most recently, partnering with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to recruit pollworkers.

Everything you need to know about Michigan's 6th congressional district race

Rep. Fred Upton
Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., speaks during a news conference on new gun reform legislation at the Capitol on Wednesday, May 9, 2018
  • Fourteen-term incumbent Rep. Fred Upton will face Democrat Jon Hoadley in Michigan's 6th congressional district.
  • The district is located in southwest Michigan and contains all of Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Van Buren, and Berrien counties.
  • If elected, Hoadley would become the first openly gay person to represent Michigan in Congress.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Fourteen-term incumbent Rep. Fred Upton will square off against Democrat Jon Hoadley to represent Michigan's 6th congressional district.

The candidates

Upton, the former Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, has been in office since 1986. He was a member of the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan. His campaign platform includes plans to lower prescription drug prices, ending the country's opioid epidemic, and making Michigan communities safer.

Mark Miller, the former chairman of the 6th Congressional District Democrats, told the Associated Press that he believes Upton walks a narrow path to avoid angering his Republican and Democratic bases.

"What we've heard year after year from those voters is 'Good old Fred. He's a good guy. He's OK by me,'" said Miller, who additionally said that Upton's vote against impeaching President Donald Trump will likely change the minds of independent voters. "The question is: Will it be enough?"

Hoadley, Upton's Democratic challenger, is in his third term as a state representative for Michigan's 6th state district. He currently serves on the state's Appropriations Committee and is a member of the Michigan Democrat's LGBT and Allies Caucus. If elected, he would become the first openly gay person to represent Michigan in Congress.

The district

Michigan's 6th congressional district is located in the state's southwest region. The district is home to all of Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph, Van Buren, and Berrien counties and part of Allegan County.

The district has traditionally leaned Republican, with President Donald Trump carrying it by eight points in 2016, but has shown indications that it could be competitive for Democrats this cycle.

As Upton won re-election by a little over four points in 2018, Republican Senate candidate John James carried the district by a margin of three points over incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow, and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer almost exactly tied GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette, 42.2% to 42.38%, in the district, according to the Daily Kos.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Upton has raised $2.1 million – about $800,000 more than Hoadley with $1.3 million. Approaching November, Hoadley has only $410,000 in cash remaining compared to Upton's $1.4 million.

What experts say

The race between Upton and Hoadley is rated as "likely Republican" by Inside Elections and "leans Republican" by The Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

First-term Rep. Elissa Slotkin looks to defend her seat against Republican Paul Junge in Michigan's 8th congressional district.

The candidates

Slotkin, a former political analyst and intelligence briefer for the Central Intelligence Agency, was the Director for Iraq for the National Security Council from 2007-2009. In 2018, she defeated two-term incumbent Mike Bishop to join the House of Representatives. She is currently a member of the Armed Services and the Homeland Security committees in Congress.

Junge, Slotkin's challenger, is a former deputy district attorney and television anchor. He recently worked in the Trump administration's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency in the Department of Homeland Security. He is running on a platform focused on border protection, anti-abortion initiatives, and "destroying terrorists."

The district

Michigan's 8th congressional district is located in the southeastern region of the state, and includes the suburbs and exurbs between the Detriot area and Lansing. The district is home to Livingston and Ingham counties as well as parts of Oakland County. The district shares Lansing and East Lansing with the state's 4th congressional district.

The district is one of 30 in the country which voted for President Donald Trump in 2016 but is currently represented by a Democrat in the House of Representatives. Trump carried the district by six points, 50% to 44%, in the 2016 election, according to the Daily Kos.

As Slotkin defeated Bishop by 3.8 points in 2018, Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer carried the district by four points, 50% to 46%, over her Republican opponent and incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow almost exactly tied with GOP Senate candidate John James in the district.

The money race

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Slotkin has a massive fundraising advantage over Junge. Slotkin has raised $6 million – over six times more than Junge with $775,000. Junge has $445,000 in hand compared to Slotkin's $5 million.

What experts say

The race between Slotkin and Junge is rated as "safe Democratic" by Inside Elections and "leans Democratic" by The Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
